The Koningin Beatrix is a former ferry of the Dutch shipping company Provinciale Stoombootdiensten in Zeeland, built in 1993 , which used the ship in ferry traffic on the Scheldt . The ship has been operating as Tremestieri between Villa San Giovanni and Messina since December 2005 .

history

The ship was built under the hull number 375 at the Dutch shipyard De Schelde . The keel was laid on August 17, 1992. The ship was christened and launched on August 31, 1993. Godmother was Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands . The ship was completed on November 30, 1993.

The ship belonged to Veerboot Westerschelde, a specially founded subsidiary of the shipyard, which initially chartered it to the Provinciale Stoombootdiensten in Zeeland . The background to this constellation was the planned construction of the Westerschelde tunnel , which would result in the suspension of ferry connections for cars and trucks across the Scheldt. In the early 1990s, it was assumed that the existing ships could handle the volume of traffic. Buying another ferry was not considered economical. At the end of December 1997, the Provinciale Stoombootdiensten in Zeeland bought the ship, after a fifth ferry with two vehicle decks , the Prins Johan Friso , had previously been put into service.

The Koningin Beatrix was used on the route between Vlissingen and Breskens and replaced the Prinses Beatrix built in 1958 .

The shipping company Provinciale Stoombootdiensten in Zeeland ended the ferry service on the Scheldt on March 15, 2003 with the last voyage of the Queen Beatrix , after the Westerschelden tunnel had been opened to traffic the day before. The ferry, like the Prins Johan Friso , was then taken over by the shipping company BBA Fast Ferries, which maintained passenger traffic over the Scheldt between Vlissingen and Breskens until the completion of smaller ferries of the type Damen Fast Ferry 3717 . The ship's use ended on May 5, 2004.

On May 27, 2004, the ferry was sold to the Italian company MPS Leasing & Factoring, who chartered it to the Caronte & Tourist shipping company. Before it was used by Caronte & Tourist, the ferry at Fincantieri in Palermo was extensively rebuilt. Caronte & Tourist has been using the ship since December 2005 as a tremestieri under the Italian flag between Villa San Giovanni and Messina.

Technical data and equipment

The propulsion of the ship takes place diesel electrically by four of ABB -Strömberg motors each with 1500  kW power driven azimuth thruster , of which there are two at both ends of the vessel. The Koningin Beatrix was the first ferry of the Provinciale Stoombootdiensten in Zeeland to be equipped with propeller gondolas.

For electricity generation are four Stork - Wärtsilä - diesel engines (type: 9HFD240) kW each with 1580 power available, each one the ABB generator (type: HSG560LK6) drive. The units are housed in two separate rooms. They can work independently of one another so that drive power is still available in the event of a partial failure of the drive motors.

Four generator sets are available for the power requirements of the on-board network, which are also divided between the two engine rooms. Here four Volvo Penta diesel engines (type: TAMD 122A / HE) each with an output of 240 kW drive four Stamford generators (type: MHC 434F).

The ship has two continuous vehicle decks with five lanes each. The lower vehicle deck has 458  lane meters . Vehicles with a total weight of up to 45 t can be transported here. The maximum axle load on the deck is 20 t. The usable height is 4.50 m. There is space for 104 cars on the deck. Trucks can also be transported in four lanes on the deck. The lower vehicle deck was closed at both ends by an upward-opening, 7.5 m wide and 4.5 m high gate. The upper vehicle deck has 466 lane meters. Vehicles with a total weight of up to 3.5 t and a maximum axle load of 2 t can be transported here. The usable height is 2.90 m. There is space for 106 cars on the upper vehicle deck. The deck was bounded at the ends by a barrier that also opened upwards, 7.5 m wide and 0.9 m high. Gates and barriers were moved hydraulically. The entrances for passengers were on the upper vehicle deck next to the entrances for cars. The passenger capacity of the ferry is 1000 people.

The passenger facilities are located above the upper vehicle deck. Here was a salon with 408 seats and a self-service restaurant. Above the passenger deck there is a wheelhouse at both ends . In front of the superstructure with the passenger facilities and the wheelhouses, the upper vehicle deck is open at both ends.

The ship was extensively rebuilt for use in Italy. A ramp was installed at both ends to access the lower vehicle deck. The two vehicle decks were connected to one another via an internal ramp. The upper vehicle deck was widened at the ends to enable easy turning and travel to the internal ramp on these transported vehicles. Access for non-motorized passengers is also via the ramps at both ends of the ship. After the renovation, the ferry is measured at 7747 GT.
