Never Let Me Down Again (German : Never Let Me Down Again ) is a song by the British band Depeche Mode . It was released in August 1987 as a single from their album Music for the Masses . In Great Britain the single was only moderately successful with position 22 as the highest chart position. In the Federal Republic of Germany the song reached number two in the charts, in some other European countries it reached top ten positions. Today he is considered one of the band's classics.

history

Recorded with David Bascombe during the recording of Music for the Masses from February 1987, the song was released as the second pre-single in August 1987, immediately before the album was released in September. Fragments of a map of the Soviet Union can be seen on the single cover , different fragments were depicted on different issues. The track "Pleasure, Little Treasure" was used as the B-side.

interpretation

The lyrics, which were not explained by the band themselves, are mostly interpreted as a reference to drug use / abuse.

Videos

There are two videos for the song; both shot by the director Anton Corbijn . The first version uses the "split mix" as a basis; minus the intro and outro of the song. Dave Gahan's dancing shoes also appeared in the video. A second version with the single version also appeared on the best-of compilation The Videos 86-98 , this version is without the dancing shoes and is considerably shorter.

Remixes

The original version of the song is significantly longer than the 4:47 album version and was released, with an additional intro, as a 9:34 long "Split Mix" on a 12 "single. The album version can also be viewed in the The last seconds of outfading heard the re-entry of the drums. An "Aggro Mix" appeared as a bonus song in the CD and cassette version of the album Music for the Masses . The "Split Mix" was remixed by the band Remixes 81 - released in 04. These mixes are considered to be the last max versions that Depeche Mode made themselves.

Another remix was released by Digitalism in 2006 as a Digital Deluxe bonus track on the best-of compilation The Best Of, Volume 1 (as well as on the vinyl edition of this album) as well as on the second volume remix compilation Remixes 2: 81– 11 ; a version by Eric Prydz also appeared on this album .

live

Never Let Me Down Again has been played live on every tour since the song was released , usually at the end of a concert. The song was documented live for the first time on video 101 . There you can also see the singer Dave Gahan waving his arms at the end of the song and the audience also making this gesture. This is now seen as a "tradition" at Depeche Mode concerts; Critics also call this the Cornfield in the Wind simulation.
