Exciter (German: Erreger) is the tenth studio album by the British synth-pop band Depeche Mode . It was recorded in various studios in London , Santa Barbara and New York . The band hired Mark Bell, head and founding member of the British music project LFO, as a producer .

background

After the singles tour in 1998, the band members withdrew and devoted themselves to their families. Martin Gore started writing new songs in 1999, but lacked motivation and inspiration. So he invited his friend and musician Paul Freegard and producer Gareth Jones, who had worked with Depeche Mode in the mid-1980s, to his private studio in Santa Barbara, California. With their (mainly moral) support, Gore managed to record demos, which he finally presented to the rest of the band members. Actual work on the album began in mid-2000 after Mark Bell was hired as a producer.

Immediately after the album was released, Depeche Mode started the worldwide Exciter Tour . The two concerts in the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy were filmed by Anton Corbijn and released as a live DVD One Night in Paris in 2002 . After the tour was over, the band members devoted themselves to their own projects. Martin Gore released his second solo album Counterfeit² in 2003 , while Dave Gahan wrote his own songs for the first time for his debut Paper Monsters . Andrew Fletcher marketed the British band Client through his own label Toast Hawaii . It wasn't until 2005 that Depeche Mode returned with a new album, Playing the Angel .

reception

The trade press rated Exciter mostly positively. For example, laut.de wrote : “It looks good for the future of Depeche Mode. "Exciter" is the step forward. If this is the beginning of a new Depeche Mode decade, Mark Bell could become the new Gareth Jones. That man drove the boys to great success from the mixing desk in the 80s. He only came to the third album. "

  • While 8 of the 13 album songs were played live on the Exciter Tour , it was only one each on the Touring the Angel 2005/06 (“Goodnight Lovers”) and Tour of the Universe 2009/10 (“Freelove” ) tours , and this even only on a few shows).
  • Despite the good reviews, the album is considered one of the least popular with fans.
