Emergence

Sheet music sample: Refrain from People Are People ( audio sample ? / I )Audio file / audio sample

The song was the band's first track for which they preprogrammed parts of the music in order to shorten the recording time in the studio. This preliminary work took place in London. The disadvantage was that the conditions for pre-production did not correspond to those in a recording studio, which is why the band had to start all over again if someone accidentally stumbled over a power cord. The studio recordings took place in January 1984 in the Hansa recording studios in Berlin under the direction of Gareth Jones. The band had rented two studios, one of them just for vocal recordings. The only part of the music that wasn't sampled was the vocals. Singer David Gahan recorded the bits of speech used in the song with the help of a walkman during a flight.

No further release was originally planned, but the band commissioned Adrian Sherwood with a remix in April 1984 . The aim was to be able to publish a danceable version. In the USA the song was released on May 16, 1984 and the maxi on July 11, 1984.

The music video for the title was directed by Clive Richardson. It was filmed on the HMS Belfast , a decommissioned cruiser of the Royal Navy , which is a museum ship on the Thames not far from Tower Bridge . Some of the recordings took place inside the ship and in the engine room, so Richardson wanted to represent the pounding electronic sound of the song.
