Everything Counts ( English for 'everything counts') is a song by the British synth-rock - or synth-pop - band Depeche Mode . It was released in 1983 as a single from the third studio album Construction Time Again . A live version was released on February 13, 1989 ( March 25, 1989 in the US ) to promote the 101 live album .
background
Everything Counts was written by Martin Gore and produced by the band with Daniel Miller and Gareth Jones . It was the first song in the band's catalog in which both singers of the band are represented “prominently” (in different places). Dave Gahan sings the lead vocals in the stanzas, while Martin Gore takes the lead vocals in the chorus, supported by Alan Wilder . The chorus was sung live by all musicians in the band with the exception of Gahan. The piece features various everyday sounds that are used as samples . Various musical instruments such as a melodica (which Gore also plays on stage during the song) and the xylophone are used.
Everything Counts explores the band's perceived greed and corruption in the UK. In the chorus it says “The grabbing hands grab all they can” ( English for 'gripping hands grab everything they can.'). The single was released at a time when the band had no contract with Mute Records ( Martin Gore released his songs under the name "Grabbing Hands Music").
performance
The song became a fan favorite and was used as the opening song for the Construction Time Again tour. The first live version of the song to appear on a commercial release was from the Some Great Reward tour in 1984, when a recording from a show in Liverpool appeared on the double-A single Blasphemous Rumors / Somebody . During the Music for the Masses tour in 1988, the band used Everything Counts as a final encore. The piece was re-released as a live single to promote album 101 . All live versions were recorded on June 18, 1988 at the Pasadena Rose Bowl during the final performance of the Music for the Masses tour. In the version, the audience sings the chorus long after the music ends.
Also in the concert film Devotional forms Everything Counts completion. Likewise, the song was played on the first two sections of Touring the Angel during the first encore and also appeared on Touring the Angel: Live in Milan .
Everything Counts was reshuffled and released in 2006. The so-called Oliver Huntemann & Stephan Bodzin Dub can be found on the "Limited Edition" of the single Martyr .
