Alan Charles Wilder (born June 1, 1959 in London ) is an English musician , composer , arranger and producer. Wilder was best known as a member of the band Depeche Mode , and he is also the head of the Recoil music project .

Life

Alan Wilder began studying the piano at the age of eight, and later took flute lessons. After graduating from school he worked as an assistant in the DJM Studios in London's West End and played in various bands, including The Dragons and The Hitmen . He also helped as a studio musician, e.g. B. for The Korgis .

When Depeche Mode was looking for a replacement keyboardist for Vince Clarke , who resigned at the end of 1981, in early 1982 and placed an anonymous ad in Melody Maker , Wilder got in touch. First he was hired as a supporting musician for performances, the album A Broken Frame was created without his intervention. Shortly afterwards he was fully integrated into the band. He immediately took over the essential part in the studio, introduced innovative production techniques such as sampling and shaped the typical Depeche Mode sound for years. Wilder played drums on the 1993 album Songs of Faith and Devotion . On June 1, 1995, however, Wilder's 36th birthday, he announced his departure from the band, which was about to break up. As a reason he named the recent lack of appreciation of his work by the other band members. From then on he concentrated on his Recoil project, which had already started in the mid-eighties .

After a few years there was a rapprochement between Wilder and his former bandmates. On February 17, 2010 he appeared on the occasion of the "Teenage Cancer Trust" project at the Royal Albert Hall after 15 years of separation together with Depeche Mode for the song Somebody . In 2011 he re-released the remix In Chains by Depeche Mode on their remix album Remixes 2: 81-11 .

In addition to Depeche Mode and Recoil, Wilder also worked as a producer and remixer, for example for the band Nitzer Ebb , whose album Ebbhead he co-produced.

Alan Wilder has been married to the musician Hepzibah Sessa since 1994, who has since performed regularly with Recoil. You have two children. On the official Recoil website, Wilder openly answers numerous questions from his fans, regardless of whether they are about Depeche Mode, Recoil, technical or private matters.
