Delta Machine is the thirteenth studio album by British group Depeche Mode . It was released in Germany on March 22, 2013, but could already be heard from March 19, 2013 on the US iTunes website and in German-speaking countries on MyVideo .

In addition to the mandatory CD version, the album was also released as a deluxe edition with two CDs.

In May 2013 the band started the Delta Machine Tour through Europe's stadiums and ended it in early March 2014 after 106 concerts in Moscow's Olimpijski . The Delta Machine Tour reached number 1 of the most profitable tours in autumn 2013, and it was number 9 worldwide throughout 2013. In the end, over 2.4 million people took part in the 32-country tour.

In November 2014, a recording of the tour was released as a live album and DVD box set entitled Live in Berlin , which was recorded at O2 World Berlin in 2013. Directed by Anton Corbijn . The concert was shown in advance in Germany in selected United Cinemas International , Cineplex and Cinecittà Nuremberg . The DVD entered the German album charts at number two immediately after its release.

Emergence

After the end of the Tour of the Universe in early 2010, the band members initially went their separate ways. Dave Gahan worked with the Soulsavers on The Light the Dead See (2012) album , for which Gahan wrote and sang the songs. Martin Gore started the minimal techno project VCMG with former Depeche Mode member Vince Clarke , which released the album Ssss in 2012 .

In March 2012, the band began recording the next studio album. In advance, Gahan and Gore had written around 20 demo songs. As with the two previous albums, Ben Hillier was hired as producer, but Gore wanted to be more involved in the production than before.

Like the two previous albums, Delta Machine contains three songs written by Dave Gahan. Two more of the songs written together with Kurt Uenala are on the bonus CD of the Deluxe Edition.

Mixed was Delta Machine by Flood , who as a producer of the albums Violator (1990) and Songs of Faith and Devotion (1993) participated.

The accompanying music video was released in August 2013, directed by Anton Corbijn . It shows a live recording of the song from the concerts in the Olympiastadion Berlin , Olympiastadion Munich and in the Leipzig Central Stadium ( Red Bull Arena ).

publication

In Germany, 142,000 copies were sold in digital and physical form in the first week after the album was released, making it the most successful first-week album sales in Germany in three and a half years. In the USA, 52,000 copies of the album were sold in the first week and thus reached the top 10 of the US charts.

reception

The reviews were mixed to positive. While Sascha Kösch described Delta Machine in De: Bug as the band's “first bad album” and Birgit Fuß criticized the German-language edition of Rolling Stone for the fact that Depeche Mode played in stadiums but could no longer write hits, according to opinion, the album offers by Michael Schuh in laut.de "more than you would have to bring in the U2 / RHCP league". Douglas Wolk finally praises the vocals of Gahan and Gore on Pitchfork , but misses fresh ideas on the album. Stephan Müller from Plattentests.de came to the conclusion: "Judging" Delta machine "ad hoc is as valuable as picking apples when the tree has not yet been planted. Many songs want to mature and be developed, [...] Standing still is the futurist's step backwards. How nice that Depeche Mode are not too lazy to run. ”Felix Johannes Enzian of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung's criticism was even more positive :“ Pop music usually derives its vitality from the exuberance of youth. Reviewers who claim that a new work by well-aged pop artists surpasses all their previous ones should not be believed, but rather assume that such judgments also include wishful thinking due to old attachment. However, there is an exception here. After hot tears and happy dances around the desk, at least the reviewer says: 'Delta Machine' is the most beautiful record Depeche Mode have ever made. "

useful information

  • As in earlier albums, Anton Corbijn designed the cover for the album . He wrote:

"The background photograph i shot in New York and the cover + logo i designed in Hamburg, during the filming of A Most Wanted Man . I wanted the cover to reflect something raw, industrial, independent, and have a graphic vibe to it. This is the 10th album i worked on for DM and the 8th album front-cover that i designed for them, including the Best Of record. There will be a special edition cd that has a 28 page booklet which contains many pages of photographs from shoots we did in New York and Louisiana. "

  • In the video game Injustice: Gods Among Us , which was released in 2013, the song Angel is included.
  • Immediately after the The Delta Machine tour , Martin Gore went back to the music studio to revise those songs that had already been written that had not appeared on the album and to publish them in the solo album MG at the end of April 2015.
