Master and Servant is a song by the British band Depeche Mode . It was released in August 1984 as a single from their album Some Great Reward . It reached high chart positions, such as 9th place in Great Britain and 2nd place in Germany , but was also discussed controversially because of the text.

history

The song was written by Martin Gore . The song openly addresses sexual practices of submission and therefore met with criticism. So the piece was not played by many radio stations in the USA . The BBC almost took the piece out of the program - but the employee responsible for the exclusion was on vacation.

According to the band's memory, the production process was one of the longest ever. The mixing alone is said to have taken seven days. After the mastering, the band noticed that the channel with the snare drum in the last chorus was muted, i.e. suppressed. The whip effect was achieved by the fact that producer Daniel Miller made a hissing and spitting noise in the studio.

Music video

The official music video initially consists of the band members in a darkened studio in SM-like clothing handling chains, whips and similar SM accessories, which are cut with recordings of housewives and construction sites and in the middle part (from the 2-minute Stamp up to 2:25) from recordings from the German Bundestag in the Bundeshaus in Bonn , namely the failed constructive vote of no confidence from 1972 against Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt (see vote of no confidence # Rainer Barzel against Willy Brandt 1972 ), the successful vote of no confidence against Helmut Schmidt , which ended in 1982 The fall of the Chancellor and led to Helmut Kohl's 16-year chancellorship , as well as exterior shots of the Reichstag building in Berlin. In the middle part, the recordings from the Bundestag are faded to 50% with the recordings of the band. At the end at 2:25 am, the images of the band will be faded with recordings of a wedding.
