history

Shake the Disease was recorded in early 1985 with Daniel Miller and Gareth Jones and was the first single from the compilation album, followed by the second new song on the album, It's Called a Heart . Shake the Disease used sampling sounds similar to rubbing along a metal grille. Alan Wilder said the song captured "the essence of the band".

Music video

The music video was the first of the band with director Peter Care . Extensive trickery was used to make the band members appear to be falling.

reception

Allmusic's Ned Raggett described the interplay of the vocal parts of Dave Gahan and Martin Gore as "lovely". The arrangement is "sly, sensuous, and just harsh enough, a combination of clattering noise samples and soothing synth wash and melody". He gave the piece four out of five stars.
