A Most Wanted Man is a British spy thriller directed by Anton Corbijn from the year 2014 . It is based on the novel of the same name Marionettes (English original title: A Most Wanted Man ) by John le Carré .

action

The film begins with the arrival of the Muslim Chechen Issa Karpov in the port of Hamburg . Karpov traveled illegally to Germany after being in Russian and Turkish prisons. He goes in search of the banker Tommy Brue, where he is targeted by a secret anti-terrorist unit led by Günther Bachmann. Bachmann was also working on Dr. Faisal Abdullah, a Muslim scholar whom he suspects of being involved in terrorist financing behind a cosmopolitan and benevolent facade.

Meanwhile, Karpov finds shelter with a Turkish woman and her son, who finally establishes contact with human rights lawyer Annabel Richter. Richter is deeply moved by the fate of the young man who suffered severe torture in Russia and wants to save him from possible deportation. Now on Bachmann's radar herself, she turns to Brue. Karpov is able to present a letter from Brues father to his father, which should give him access to his inheritance, which lies with Brues private bank. It concerns many millions from mafia activities of the father.

Bachmann is not the only one who is interested in Karpov and Richter: The Office for the Protection of the Constitution urges Bachmann to arrest the alleged terrorist Karpov before he can join a suspected terrorist cell. Against the intervention of the rival service Bachmann may eventually only the influence of the CIA - Resident protect Martha Sullivan. Bachmann, whose sources were revealed during a mission in Beirut , nevertheless has reservations about Sullivan because he blames the CIA for the failure in Lebanon .

Bachmann thus gains time for his plan to get to Karpov through Richter, Abdullah through Karpov, and the people behind him through Abdullah. He has Richter kidnapped by his team and convinces them to work with him - supposedly to protect Karpov. At the same time, he puts pressure on Brue to ensure that Karpov's fortune is paid out. Issa is not personally interested in the money because he despises his father's deeds. However, the judge convinces him to use the money for Abdullah's aid projects. When Brue approaches Abdullah, his son opens the door for him. The viewer knows him as the young student whom Bachmann has long referred to as a source against Abdullah.

As expected, Abdullah names a number of aid organizations in the Muslim world that Bachmann has Sullivan review. Sullivan has meanwhile been able to gain the trust of Bachmann - also through the admission that the CIA has failed in Beirut - and is privy to his plans. However, all aid organizations have shown themselves to be of integrity. Nevertheless, the ingenious plan should still work out at the crucial date in Brues Bank. In the bugged office, Brue Abdullah presented the transaction list with the request that each of the payees listed be signed off. On the last page, Abdullah finally wants a change: A Cypriot shipping company is to be used to act as a front company for terrorist financing. When he signs his signature, Bachmann triumphs in the observation car in front of the bank. He instructs Abdullah's son, who is supposed to pick up his father, by telephone to put him off with an excuse. Because Bachmann, in the role of a taxi driver, would like to address Abdullah and win him over against the background of the compromising information as a source against the next largest "fish".

But it doesn't come to that: the taxi is stopped by a CIA team under the eyes of the head of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution; Abdullah and Karpov are kidnapped. Bachmann notices the intrigue against him and its subtle, sophisticated method and leaves the scene with resignation.

criticism

The film received an 87 percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes . The DVD fan website praised the film and wrote: “Moving, full of emotion and tension, A Most Wanted Man crackles from the first to the last scene. This highly intelligent agent story is extremely contemporary and deeply human, a story of love, betrayal, power and the modern world in which we live ... ”Die Blickpunkt: Film called A Most Wanted Man“ best old school cinema ”, the“ less on action rather than character drawing ”. Spiegel Online praised the film, especially the portrayal of Hoffman: “In its dignity and tragedy, Hoffman's interpretation of the role undermines the virtuoso distance with which Corbijn otherwise illustrates this bitter story of guilt and uncertainty on the various fronts of the war on terrorism . The great freedom, the promise of Hamburg's streets to the world, it seems vanishingly small in the end. Like the screen without Philip Seymour Hoffman ”.
