Flood (producer)

Flood , actually Mark Ellis (born August 16, 1960 in Manchester , Great Britain ) is a British sound engineer and music producer who has worked with Depeche Mode , Thirty Seconds to Mars , U2 , Erasure and the Nine Inch Nails , among others .

Life

While still playing bass in the British mod band The Lambrettas , he began training as a sound engineer in the Morgan Studios in London in 1978 . The name Flood has its origins in this period. Ellis was known in the studio for constantly supplying the artists and technicians with tea, while his colleague didn't and the two were nicknamed Flood  = 'flood' and Drought ( drought  = 'drought') by Chris Tsangarides when recording for The Cure. ) received. Further stations of his training were the Marcus Studio and the Trident Studios. He completed his training in 1981 as an assistant engineer on the album Movement produced by Martin Hannett for New Order . In 1982, he oversaw the debut album With Sympathy by Ministry . He then worked as a sound engineer for the Some Bizarre label for their artists Soft Cell , Marc and the Mambas , Psychic TV and Cabaret Voltaire , before moving to the Mute label. For Mute he worked as a sound engineer and later also as a producer. His first producer roles included The Firstborn is Dead for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds in 1985 and Wonderland for Erasure in 1986 .

In 1987 Flood achieved his commercial breakthrough when he worked as a sound engineer on the album The Joshua Tree by the Irish band U2 at the side of producer Brian Eno . This was followed by work as one of the numerous producers for Nine Inch Nails ( Pretty Hate Machine ), Depeche Mode ( Violator ) and Pop Will Eat Itself ( This is the Day ). In 1993 he produced the album Zooropa by U2 alongside Brian Eno . He produced a variety of different releases from bands such as the Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, the Smashing Pumpkins , PJ Harvey , the Sneaker Pimps , a-ha , Placebo , The Killers , Sigur Rós and Glasvegas .

Flood is known as a versatile producer without being restricted to one genre. He oversaw albums from the genres of post-punk , synth-pop and industrial rock and is therefore considered one of the pioneers of sound for alternative rock . In addition to his own studio The Bedroom, he and Alan Moulder have been running the Assault & Battery 2 Studio in London, which emerged from Morgan Studios since 2008.
