The British band Sneaker Pimps was founded in the early 1990s by Chris Corner , an astrophysics student from London , and his friend Liam Howe, who attended art school in Reading .
Band history
Corner and Howe grew up in Middlesbrough , where they initially produced “dance music” in a small home studio. They define their musical roots from a mixture of synth pop , dance and melodic punk , to which they ideologically feel they belong.
Albums
Becoming X
Under the project name Line of Flight and Frisk they released almost two EPs on the then quite new Clean Up - record label . The original sneaker Pimps were inspired by dance in their musical work, but they wanted to create song-oriented structures. As a result, some demo songs were recorded in which Chris took over the vocal part. Ian Pickering, a friend from old days, was also involved in the recording and writing of the pieces. In addition, singer Kelli Dayton (now active as Kelli Ali ) was brought on board for the recordings, as they wanted to give the songs a feminine, melodic flair. This resulted in Becoming X , the debut album , which brought the international breakthrough for the - actually temporarily planned - project of the Sneaker Pimps. Nellee Hooper and Marius de Vries , who were also involved in the first Björk albums, were responsible for the production ; this can be heard especially with the successful single "6 Underground". The style of the album is often referred to as trip-pop because it has a lot of trip-hop elements in rhythm , but is much less dark.
The Sneaker Pimps then embarked on a worldwide tour that took them mainly through the United States. The band eventually split from singer Kelli Dayton.
Splinter
In 1999 the follow-up album, Splinter , was published, on which guitarist Chris Corner sings for the first time. Also the sound of the band was hardly recognizable. With the exception of one more aggressive song, all pieces are dominated by the acoustic guitar, the drums act cautiously in front of heavy bass lines, keyboard sounds and film music samples round off the sound. Despite excellent reviews, the album was not a commercial success, but also made the Sneaker Pimps better known on the European mainland after they supported Placebo on their 2001 tour there as the opening act.
Bloodsport
In 2002, after a three-year break, the third studio album called Bloodsport was released , which again brought many musical changes with it. Although many of the songs were similar to Splinter's style , the album still seems more beat-oriented and aggressive. The title song Bloodsport , for example, is a flawless house track , while the opener Kiro TV mainly incorporates rock elements.
outlook
The official homepage has long been announcing that the sneaker pimps are "mutating".
Chris Corner has been working on his solo project IAMX for some time .
