Martin Hannett
Martin Hannett (born May 31, 1948 in Manchester ; † April 18, 1991 ibid) was a British music producer who played a decisive role in the New Wave movement.
Hannett was closely associated with the Factory Records label , whose band Joy Division (along with other factory artists such as The Durutti Column , The Happy Mondays, etc.) he helped create their unmistakable sound. In 1982 he split up with the label over financial issues. At this point he was already heavily addicted to drugs . He died of heart failure in 1991 at the age of 42 . He had gained so much weight in his last few months that his coffin did not initially fit into the grave that was dug for him.
A pseudonym of Hannett was Martin Zero.
In the modern saga category belongs the claim that Martin Hannett produced the Dead Kennedys' album In God We Trust, Inc. Only when announcing the track Nazi Punks Fuck Off does it say “Fuck off, overproduced by Martin Hannett”, which can be seen as a cynical comment by Jello Biafra .
Actor Andy Serkis played Hannett in the film 24 Hour Party People , which tells the story of the Manchester music scene from 1976 to 1997.
