Kitchens of Distinction

Kitchens of Distinction is an English alternative rock band that was assigned to the genre shoegazing and released four albums between 1989 and 1994 . The band broke up in 1996 and another album was released in 2013.

Band history

Kitchens of Distinction was founded in Tooting , London in 1986 by Patrick Fitzgerald (bass, vocals), Julian Swales (guitar) and Dan Goodman (drums). They named themselves after a kitchen faucet and decoration company that Swales had seen advertising on a bus.

After her debut single Last Gasp Death Shuffle , she on her own label in 1987 Gold Rush published in the British music magazine NME for single of the week was named that took independent label One Little Indian Records , the band signed and released after two more Singles ( Prize and The 3rd Time We Opened the Capsule ) 1989 debut album Love Is Hell and the third single Elephantine . The album was well received by the critics. Also relevant to the press was frontman Patrick Fitzgerald's open commitment to homosexuality , which was not yet taken for granted at the end of the 1980s.

In 1991 the band released their second album Strange Free World , which was produced by Hugh Jones . It hit the British album charts for the first time , but only spent a week at number 45. The 1992 album The Death of Cool, which was at number 72 for a week , brought even fewer sales figures .

The fourth album Cowboys and Aliens (1994) missed the top 100 of the album charts, but the only single from it (Now It's Time to Say Goodbye) spent a week at number 86.

In 1995 the band was terminated from their label. In May 1996 she released the single Feel My Genie under the name Kitchens OD on the independent label Fierce Panda Records, which was voted "Single of the Week" by the music magazine Melody Maker . Nevertheless, it disbanded in the summer of 1996.

After the dissolution

Patrick Fitzgerald released the album Hark at Her in 1997 under the name Fruit , on which the other former KOD members Swales and Goodman played. Miki Berenyi from Lush and Isabel Monteiro from Drugstore were also involved.

In 1998 Fitzgerald founded the project Lost Girls with the American singer Heidi Berry , of which only one single (Needle's Eye) was initially released. It wasn't until 2014 that the album Lost Girls was released on the 3 Loop Music label.

From 2002 Fitzgerald released three albums and several singles under the name Stephen Hero .

In 2003, One Little Indian Records released a best-of compilation under the name Capsule (The Best of KOD 1988-1994) .

Julian Swales wrote music for film, theater and dance after KOD broke up.

Reunion

In September 2012, Fitzgerald announced that KOD were working on a new album, which was released on September 30, 2013 under the title Folly .
