The Happy Mondays are a British rock band from Manchester . Together with the Stone Roses and the Inspiral Carpets , they are considered pioneers of the Madchester movement. In addition, her psychedelic dance music accompanied the emergence of rave culture in the Manchester area.
history
The beginnings of the Happy Mondays go back to 1980. The still unnamed cover band from Salford , Greater Manchester originally consisted of lead singer Shaun Ryder , his brother Paul Ryder (born April 24, 1964 in Manchester) on bass, guitarist Mark Day (born December 29, 1961 in Manchester) and drummer Gary Whelan (* February 12, 1966 in Salford). Keyboardist Paul Davis (born March 7, 1966 in Manchester) joined a little later. In 1983 they adopted the current band name, which they chose based on the New Order song Blue Monday .
In 1984 they took part in a band contest at the famous Haçienda Club . Although they finished last, they caught the attention of music manager Tony Wilson . In 1985, the Ryder brothers sent fashion store owner Phil Sachs a demo recording , who then became the band's manager and organized them to support New Order. In 1985 they released the Forty Five EP with the song Delightful on the Factory Records label . In the same year, the dancer and percussionist Mark "Bez" Berry also joined the Happy Mondays. In 1987 the debut album Squirrel And G-Man Twenty Four Hour Party People Plastic Face Carnt Smile (White Out) , produced by John Cale, was released . In 1991 Rowetta Idah became the band's singer.
Her biggest hits were Step On and Kinky Afro , both of which reached number 5 on the UK singles chart in 1990. Your phonograms were released on the Factory Records label .
In 1993 the group separated for the first time. They made a first short comeback in the late 1990s, the second from 2004. A new album (the last dated from 1992) was released in the summer of 2007 with the title Uncle Dysfunctional .
