Associated associations are u. a. the Clapton CFC , Tennis Borussia Berlin , Vienna Sports Club and FC St. Pauli .

history

Soccer

Red Star Leipzig '99 e. V. was founded on February 1st, 1999 as a football club by 20 alternative young people. On September 5, 1999, the 1st and 2nd men's teams played their first competitive game in the 3rd district class , the lowest division in the German soccer league system (11th division). In the following years, the first team got several promotions and the move into the city cup final in 2002, in which a new audience record was set; in the 2008/09 season she finally reached the Leipzig district class (8th league).

On October 24, 2009, several dozen rioters from right-wing extremist backgrounds rioted during an away game in Brandis , as a result of which investigations were initiated against unknown persons on suspicion of a serious breach of the peace and dangerous physical harm . In the 12 months that followed, five perpetrators were sentenced to between two and three years in prison. 19 further proceedings followed.

On May 22, 2011, five games before the end of the season , the stars secured promotion to the Leipzig North District League (7th division) with a goalless draw against SG Rotation Leipzig in front of 780 spectators. There the team reached 13th (and last) place in the 2011/12 season and was relegated to the newly created city league, which replaced the previous district class seasons.

For the second half of the 2013/14 season, the British sporting goods manufacturer Lonsdale joined as a shirt sponsor for the 1st and 2nd men's teams. In addition, the company provided a bus with a loudspeaker system, which is also used outside the square, for example at anti-fascist demonstrations.

The 2014/15 season turned out to be a very successful one: the construction of the 700,000 euro “social wing” was carried out outside the square. A "new" building with changing rooms and showers was built in an old, empty gymnasium that is under monument protection . On the pitch, the first team fought head-to-head with VfK Blau-Weiß Leipzig and won 13 games in a row. On the last day of the match there was an unusual situation: Roter Stern Leipzig was one point behind leaders Blau-Weiß Leipzig, both clubs met supposedly easy opponents in their game. 10 minutes before the end of the game, Red Star was leading 8-1 in his game, while Blue-White was 2-1 behind in their game. The rising star would be RSL. Then a storm passed over Leipzig; After brief interruptions, all games could be played to the end, with the exception of those of Blau-Weiß, which were canceled. A pairing at LSV Südwest, 500 meters as the crow flies from the blue-white stadium, could also be played properly to the end. The sports court decided ten days later to score the game with 0: 2 against blue-white. Thus, the stars became city champions and rose to the national class north.

Membership development

In the first 10 years after it was founded, the number of members of the association rose to around 200. A large increase has been recorded since 2009, with the stars welcoming their thousandth member in November 2016. In 2016 alone, over 300 new people joined the project. No other sports project in Leipzig has as many people playing soccer as the RSL (637 as of February 1, 2018). These are spread over several teams, including a full youth department with over twenty children's teams, one women's, two senior and six men's teams.

Other sports

In addition to the football department, other sports are now represented in the club such as basketball, boxing, handball, volleyball, roller derby, tennis, gymnastics, triathlon, croquet, table tennis, climbing, self-defense for young people, children's sports, badminton, darts, off-road, athletics, Cycling and running.

In October 2016 the roller derby department of the SC DHfK Leipzig , the Riot Rocketz , announced their transfer to Roter Stern Leipzig. She justified this step, among other things, with the political self-image and the public appearance of the RSL. In October 2018, the Roller Derby division was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga. The Red Stars now offer a total of 19 different sports.

In May 2017, the city of Leipzig announced the handover of a usage contract for the sports facility on Teichstraße to the RSL, which was converted into a lease contract for a period of 30 years in July 2018.

Prizes and awards

On November 8, 2009, the association was awarded the Saxon Prize for Democracy in the Dresden Frauenkirche . The prize is endowed with 15,000 euros and “is a success due to the brave commitment of the association alone,” said jury member Anetta Kahane .

On September 17, 2010, the association was awarded the Julius Hirsch Prize ; this prize is endowed with a total of 20,000 euros. The German Football Association honored Roter Stern Leipzig with second place because of its commitment to counter any discrimination based on gender, origin or sexual preference.

Self-image and social commitment

The members of the association represent various, primarily politically left-wing positions. The Rote Stern Leipzig clearly distinguishes itself from racist and discriminatory tendencies. The annual participation of over one hundred members of the association in the anti-racist world championship , organized by the German-Italian organization Istoreco / Progetto Ultra , promotes tolerance, peaceful coexistence and openness to the world within the association. In the years 2000 and 2007 the association organized the biannual alliance active soccer fans meeting. The association presented the exhibition BallARBEIT - Scenes from Migration and Football , created by the project group Floodlight , in October 2008 at the University of Leipzig . At the local level, Roter Stern Leipzig uses press releases and publications to draw attention to racist and discriminatory tendencies in Leipzig football clubs.

Beyond sport, the club sees itself as a political cultural project in which, in addition to the games of various sports teams, concerts, discos, demonstrations and the like are organized. This also includes the publications of the benefit CDs More than soccer and the fanzines Prasses Erben and Kiezkicker . The otherwise common structure of football clubs, in which elected board members steer the fate of the club, are rejected and instead issues relating to the club are discussed in a weekly plenum and finally decisions are made together.

In 2009, the Red Star launched the initiative for more social responsibility in grassroots soccer ball (IVF). In addition to the Rote Stern Leipzig, the fan initiative “Bunte Curve” supports the IVF. It is used in the field of Leipzig football, which is organized by the Leipzig City Football Association e. V. (FVSL) is organized, anti-discriminatory, integrative and violence prevention.

On January 11, 2016, around 250 right-wing violent criminals from around the Legida demonstration attacked around twenty shops in Wolfgang-Heinze-Strasse in Connewitz. The fish shop , the club's bar, was also attacked. According to the Leipzig police, the attackers were right-wing extremist football hooligans from 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig and Halleschen FC . In response to this, the RSL, in cooperation with the Amadeu Antonio Foundation , the UT Connewitz and many other projects, organized a fundraising campaign through which more than 50,000 euros could be collected for the victims.

In October 2016, the association started the Kiezclub in den Kiez campaign to preserve the long-awaited sports field in Leipzig-Connewitz. For this purpose, the support of 250 projects, politicians and initiatives from over 20 countries could be won within one month.

At the end of November 2016, the RSL opened the exhibition penalty area Saxony 2.0 - football between resentment and integration , an updated version of the exhibition of the same name from 2009 with its initiative for more social responsibility in popular sports football (IVF) . The initiative was funded by the state program Cosmopolitan Saxony for Democracy and Tolerance of the Saxon State Ministry for Social Affairs and Consumer Protection .
