This Is War is the third studio album by the American alternative rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars . It was released on December 4th, 2009 on EMI Records .
prehistory
In 2008, the band was sued by their Virgin Records label for breach of contract for $ 30 million. The contract was signed in 1999 with the now defunct Immortal Records label and was taken over by Virgin Records in 2004. It said that Thirty Seconds to Mars committed to producing three studio albums by 2008, which they failed to do by then. The band described the lawsuit on their website as "ridiculously exaggerated" and "completely unrealistic".
The legal battle lasted almost a year until the band announced on April 29, 2009 that the case had been settled. The California Court of Appeal's De Havilland Act does not allow any employment contract in California to last longer than seven years. Despite the dispute, the band signed a new contract with EMI, the parent company of Virgin Records.

It took two years to work on This Is War . According to Jared Leto , it was a tough time for the band as they didn't have a label in the meantime. For the first time the album was fully recorded at the International Center for the Advancement of the Arts and Sciences of Sound in Los Angeles .
In May 2009, Kanye West announced that he and Jared Leto were working together on a song called Hurricane . Due to a dispute between the record companies of Thirty Seconds to Mars and Kanye West, this version could not be used for the album. Instead, a version without Kanye West was used for the album. On the deluxe version of the album, however, the song is available as Hurricane 2.0 with Kanye West.

Trivia
The song This Is War can be heard in the credits of the virtual role-playing game Dragon Age: Origins . Kings and Queens is the theme song for the movie Skyline . A cover is attached to the actual cover, which shows the face of a fan of the band. Anyone could send in a picture of themselves, from which 2000 photos were then selected. These were randomly distributed among the albums. Some of the pictures also feature celebrities such as Bam Margera , Gabe Saporta , Kat Von D and Conan O'Brien . There are also pictures of the manager of the band, the board of directors of the label and the mother of Jared and Shannon Leto .
