The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards , presented by the music broadcaster MTV , took place on August 28, 2011 at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles . This time the annual event was not moderated by a special moderator. The show was opened by Lady Gaga . Adele and Katy Perry were the most successful artists of the evening with three prizes each; Perry won the Video of the Year award for her single Firework . Britney Spears was able to achieve success with two prizes , she was honored as the best pop video for Till the World Ends and received the prize for her life's work, the Video Vanguard Award .

The nominees were announced on July 20, 2011. Singer Katy Perry topped the nomination list with nine entries. Followed by Kanye West and Adele with seven nominations each. Katy Perry is also the first artist to be nominated for four different music videos, something that nobody was able to do before. In addition, in 2011 the award for the Best Video With a Message was awarded for the first time , in which the best videos with a statement / message were up for nomination.
