Foster the People is an American indie - electro - band from California .
Band history
Beginnings
The head of the band, singer and guitarist Mark Foster, actually comes from Cleveland , but went to Los Angeles to earn money as a composer for film and television commercials, among other things. At first he was also a solo musician before founding the band Foster the People in autumn 2009 with bassist Cubbie Fink and drummer Mark Pontius .
On the local radio station KROQ they drew attention the following year with the song Pumped Up Kicks , which became one of the summer hits of 2010. The catchy chorus and the poppy upbeat rhythm stand in contrast to the dark text, which is about a socially isolated , psychotic youth who has a rampage fantasy and recommends his potential victims to run away from the bullets of his gun. With the song, the band wants to take a stand against youth violence . Mark Foster was bullied in high school and Cubbie Fink's cousin is a survivor of the Columbine High School rampage .
Their popularity increased via the Internet, in particular via the Hype Machine portal , which they entered through the contribution of a German blogger. The interest in Foster the People grew internationally, among other things they were also on the playlist of the Austrian youth broadcaster FM4 in 2010 .
The band got a contract with the major label Sony / Columbia in June 2010 and in January 2011 they released their first EP, which is named after the song. In April they performed at Coachella 2011 . Shortly thereafter, her debut song Pumped Up Kicks hit the charts in North America and eventually reached number 3 in the US. The debut album Torches followed a little later and entered the US album charts at number 8 . Foster the People enjoyed international success with the song, particularly in Australia where it rose to number 1 and the album reached number 5.
Since the success of Pumped Up Kicks in 2011 until now
For Foster the People 2012 was marked by an extensive tour as well as the writing of new songs and the recording of a second album. The single sold over 6 million copies in the US alone and is one of the top 20 best-selling singles of all time.
On January 14, 2014, the single Coming of Age was released. It was an anticipation of the album Supermodel , which was released in March 2014.
On April 27, 2017, Foster The People released EP III . It contains three songs, which can also be found on the band's next studio album. The album Sacred Hearts Club was released on July 21, 2017.
