Someone Like You (German translation "Jemand wie du") is a song by the British singer Adele . It was released on February 15, 2011 as the third single from their second album 21 . The song was written by Adele and Dan Wilson and reached number 1 on the UK singles chart on February 20, 2011 , becoming their first number one hit.
Composition and content
Someone Like You is a piano - ballad , and deals with the separation of a long relationship. The title is determined by Adele's powerful and soulful singing , which reaches several climaxes in the song. Some critics compared Someone Like You to Adele's song Hometown Glory from her debut album 19 .
criticism
The song was received positively by music critics . BBC Music wrote: “ Someone Like You just consists of soulful vocals and a beautiful piano melody , Adele is making these kinds of songs modern and trendy again. Nobody fits the title better than Adele herself, the only one who could sing Someone Like You on a level like Adele would be the superstar Jessie J ”. Soul Culture praised the title: “ Someone Like You is one of the best pieces on their current album. It is about lost love and Adele brings the content and the emotions of the song to the audience with her singing, it hardly gets better than Adele does. "
Appearances
Adele sang the song live at the BRIT Awards 2011. She was accompanied by a pianist , the performance and the song quickly became popular and a few hours after the performance Someone Like You stormed to # 1 on the UK Download and iTunes charts. When she performed at the BRIT Awards, Adele burst into tears and said, “I was really emotional at the end of the gig because the feelings in the song triggered the emotions in me. I thought of my ex-boyfriend, I imagined him watching me on TV at home and laughing because he knew that I was crying because of him and was like, 'Yeah, I still have it on my finger wrapped '. Then everyone got up - I was overwhelmed ”. Adele also sang the song on Later with Jools Holland . In the United States , Adele sang the song on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on February 24, 2011 and on Jimmy Kimmel Live !.
Music video
The recording of the BRIT Awards performance was the official music video until the end of September . On September 29, an official video directed by Jake Nava was released, in black and white , in which Adele walks through a deserted Paris .
