action

Jane Goodale works in the production of a television show. A new colleague, Ray Brown, is hired there. Another colleague, Eddie Alden, scoffs at her reaction when she first sees Ray. A little later Eddie asks Jane if she would like to live with him as a lodger. She refuses angrily.

Ray and Jane start a relationship, although Ray has another girlfriend who he allegedly wants to leave. They want to move in, Jane gives up her apartment. Ray says he can't leave his girlfriend at all. Since Jane has to move out of her old apartment, she moves in with Eddie as a lodger.

Jane develops theories about the male behavior patterns borrowed from the animal world. Her friend Liz persuades her to publish the theories in the magazine Liz works for. A British doctor born in 1937 is invented as a writer. A photo of the recently deceased woman who has no relatives is published as a photo of the doctor.

The host of the show, Diane Roberts, demands that her staff find the doctor and invite them to the show. There's supposed to be a phone call, Jane hesitates. She goes into the studio and reveals that the doctor was just made up. Eddie leaves the studio. Jane calls her anti-man theories nonsense and runs after Eddie. She reaches him when he has already got into a taxi, which she stops. Eddie gets out and kisses her.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film was "surprisingly poorly made" for a work by a promising young director like Tony Goldwyn. He devotes more time to portraying the “cynical worldview” of the main character than portraying the love story. The end seems "forced". Berardinelli criticized the portrayal of Ashley Judd and praised those of Hugh Jackman and Marisa Tomei. Some dialogues are "clever".

The Lexicon of International Films wrote: “A boringly written comedy staged without any timing, which only arranges beautiful people in chic professional and private spheres. Even the performers cannot compensate for the lack of joke despite their sometimes decent game. "
