Lynda Obst (born April 14, 1950 in New York City ) is an American film producer and writer .

Life

Lynda Rosen was born in New York City in 1950 to the textile merchant Robert A. and the teacher Claire Rosen and grew up in Harrison . She has two younger brothers.

She completed her studies at Pomona College in Claremont , California in 1972 with a bachelor's degree. She then studied philosophy at Columbia University .

She then worked as an editor for The Rolling Stone History of the Sixties and then moved to the New York Times Magazine for three years . After her husband David Obst moved with her to Los Angeles in 1979 , she initially worked for the film producer Peter Guber at Casablanca / PolyGram as Vice President of Creative Affairs. Among other things, she was involved in the development of the material for the dance film Flashdance .

She joined The Geffen Film Company in 1982 , where she was involved in the making of films such as Loose Business and The After Midnight . She left Geffen to set up the film production company Hill / Obst Productions with Debra Hill , which produced films first for Paramount and later for Disney . She and Hill produced films such as The Night of Adventure and the Oscar-nominated King of the Fishermen .

In 1989 she produced Nora Ephron's directorial debut Showtime for Columbia Pictures , and then served as executive producer on Ephron's second film Sleepless in Seattle . Then she moved fruit at 20th Century Fox , where she films like this ... days , a second chance , a state of emergency and Someone Like produced.

After producing Contact for Warner Bros. , Obst moved back to Paramount Pictures, where she made numerous other films. In addition to movies, Obst also produced television series such as Hot in Cleveland and The Soul Man . As a writer, she has written various books on the film industry and articles on the role of women in the entertainment industry. She writes for The Huffington Post , The New York Times , Los Angeles Times and Harper's Magazine , among others .

In April 2010 she received the We Empower Together Award .

A son (* 1978) was born from his marriage to David Obst.
