action
17-year-old Chris Parker is looking forward to her boyfriend Mike Todwell for an evening date. He moves her, however, and the visit to a fine French restaurant is canceled. As a distraction, she complies with a request from befriended Andersons to look after their daughter Sara in a well-off Chicago suburb while the parents attend a business reception in the city center. Sara's 15-year-old brother Brad is secretly in love with Chris and is constantly raised by his eight-year-old sister. When Chris' friend Brenda calls from the bus station and reports that she ran away from home, Chris decides to drive into town with the children to help Brenda. Brad's pubescent friend Daryl also insists on being taken.
After a flat tire on the highway , the tow truck John Pruitt, who happened to be passing by, offers his help to the penniless quartet. Instead of towing the car to a workshop as promised, the jealous Pruitt makes a detour to his unfaithful wife and chases her lover away with revolver shots. Chris and the children seek shelter in the rival's parked car, but too late notice the car thief Joe Gipp, who is busy short-circuiting the car under the steering wheel. He brings his valuable booty together with the unwelcome "cargo" to a professional gang of car thugs . Their leader Bleak initially takes the group into custody. They managed to escape via an iron girder under the roof of the workshop hall. However, Daryl had previously stolen a Playboy magazine , which contained important notes that Bleak needed for his criminal activities. Thereupon the criminals attach themselves to the heels of the young people. On the run they get through a back entrance onto the concert stage of a club frequented exclusively by blacks, which at the insistence of the singer they are only allowed to leave after an improvised blues performance .
Meanwhile, Brenda is confronted with sometimes absurd situations and dark figures at the bus station. She comes across a man who repeatedly presents a weapon for unknown reasons, as well as a homeless person who regards the phone booth as his home. In addition, Brenda is temporarily robbed of her glasses, confuses a rat for a cat because of her nearsightedness and receives a rebuff at the hot dog stand for not having any cash with her.
After leaving the club, Chris, Brad, Daryl and Sara can again narrowly escape their pursuers with the help of the city train . The next threat awaits them on the train: two warring street gangs collide in the same compartment, of all places. With a courageous intervention, Chris and Brad enable the exit at the next stop. Brad is injured in the foot and then given medical attention at the University Hospital . Due to a mix-up, the message disseminated, Brad had died in the treatment, after which Chris briefly into unconsciousness falls.
At the hospital, the group learns from the fugitive Pruitt that their repaired car can be picked up at Dawson's garage for $ 50 . On the way there, the four of them pass a college party. Since Sara urgently needs to go to a toilet, Chris is persuaded to make a short stopover. While Daryl is almost seduced, Chris meets the sympathetic student Dan Lynch. He helps her out with $ 45, some of which he borrows from his friends, and takes her to Dawson's garage with the kids . The owner initially insists on paying the full $ 50, but lets Sara soften him up, who thinks he is her comic book hero Thor . On the way back, Chris accidentally notices Mike's sports car parked not far from the posh French restaurant. What she had already feared is now becoming a certainty: Your boyfriend is having fun with another girl there. Annoyed, she confronts him and ridicules him in front of the assembled guests.
In the meantime, the criminal gang around Gipp, Bleak and henchman Graydon was able to take up the trail again. Sara has meanwhile left the group unnoticed to look at the window displays of a toy shop. When approached by Bleak, she escapes in the direction of the same high-rise in which her parents are about to say goodbye to the party. Arrived on the top floor, which is still under construction, Sara rappels down the sloping facade of the glass roof, followed by Graydon. Chris and the two boys arrive unrecognized at their parents' reception one floor below and watch Sara through the window. A little later they manage to pull the little one up again and hand the Playboy magazine to Gipp.
The four make their way home, not without collecting the relieved Brenda at the bus station. Chris overtakes his parents, who are also driving on the highway, to get home before they do. The children are quickly brought to their rooms and the kitchen is tidied up so that the unsuspecting parents cannot become suspicious. After saying goodbye, Dan suddenly arrives in front of the house because Sara forgot her roller skate in the back seat of his car. Not only the children realize that Chris and Dan have fallen in love with each other.
