The Crain Communications Building is a 41-story, 177-foot-tall skyscraper located at 150 North Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago , Illinois near Millennium Park . The building was initially known as the Smurfit-Stone Building and Stone Container Building and the Associates Center . Popularly it is also called diamond or vagina building .
history
Construction on the building began in 1983 on the site of the demolished John Crerar Library and was completed in 1984. The building, known for its unusual, sloping facade, was designed by Sheldon Schlegman from the architects A. Epstein and Sons. The building has 41 rented floors; the 5 upper, not rented floors are not counted as official floors. In the two peaks that house the air conditioners . Although the building looks like it is split in half, there is only one gap at the top. At local political or sporting events, the pitched roof is irradiated with sports slogans such as GO BEARS (“Forward, Bears”) or Go SOX (“Forward, Sox”). During Election Day in 2008, the slogan VOTE 2008 was displayed.
The Crain Communications Building is considered an "intelligent" building with sophisticated environmental and safety facilities. Three years after the completion of the building, it played a role in the Touchstone Pictures film Adventures in Babysitting . In the movie Transformers 3 , the building is destroyed. The building is part of the SimCity 4 game and the Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 video game .
The name was changed in March 2012 after the Crain Communications Group moved its headquarters there.
