In Chicago living Birdee Pruitt during a talk show publicly humiliated on television, telling her as her best friend on camera to have an affair with her husband Bill.
Birdee then drives with her daughter Bernice to the small town of Smithville , Texas, where she grew up. There she lives with her mother Ramona Calvert, who is also the home of the underage son of Birdee's sister, as she is currently working in Hollywood .
Birdee meets her former schoolmate Justin Matisse, whose advances she initially fends off. She gets a job in a photo lab. She meets with Justin, but is still cautious about him and defends herself against her mother's attempts to couple. But then she and Justin get closer. When Ramona dies, Bill comes to the funeral. He explains to Birdee that he wants a divorce from her in order to build a new future with his current partner. Much to the disappointment of little daughter Bernice, who was convinced that her daddy would take her with him, he travels back to Chicago. But Birdee manages to comfort Bernice because they are both a strong team. Birdee and Justin become a couple.

The three “K's” indicate the low emancipation claim in these women's films. More important than women's rights are women's tears, they bring more cinema tickets sold. Gena Rowlands seems to have specialized in this genre: In " Power of Love " she took care of Julia Roberts, in " A Light in My Heart " she took care of the abandoned Marisa Tomei. "
