Caleb Deschanel (born September 21, 1944 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American cinematographer and film director .

Career

For his work as a cameraman, Deschanel has so far been nominated for six Oscars , the last time in 2019 for the film Werk ohne Autor . He has also won numerous other awards, including the 1976 Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival for the short film Trains .

He made his debut as a director in 1976 with the documentary Trains . His feature film debut followed in 1982 with The Great Magic . In 1990 he directed three episodes of the television series Twin Peaks . A year earlier he made the adventure film Crusoe .

He has been married to actress Mary Jo Deschanel since July 8, 1972 and is father of actresses Zooey and Emily Deschanel .
