action
Chris is heavily indebted to a drug lord after his mother used the drugs hidden in her house to work on her car. He decides she has to die so he can get her life insurance. To the best of his knowledge, this is issued to his sister Dottie, who is mentally retarded because of the abuse by her mother and therefore lives with his father Ansel and his wife Sharla. Together with Ansel, he hires Killer Joe, a police officer who has a second leg as a contract killer . However, they can't afford the upfront fee, whereupon Killer Joe demands the virgin Dottie as an advance payment, at least until he's received his fee.
Joe kills Chris and Dottie's mother, making it look like a drunk accident. However, when Ansel and Sharla want to cash in the life insurance after the funeral, they discover that the beneficiary is not Dottie, but Rex, the mother's partner. It was he who gave Chris the wrong information, probably in the hope that he would get rid of the mother. Chris, who has meanwhile been badly damaged by the drug lord, panics because he can now neither pay him nor Joe. He therefore plans to flee to South America with Dottie.
Joe visits Sharla and Ansel. He brutally forces Sharla to admit that she was having an affair with Rex and that she was behind the plan with the life insurance. Dottie, who refused to go with Chris without speaking to Joe one last time, and Chris join them. Joe wants to take Dottie with him, whereupon a fight breaks out between Chris and Joe over a gun. Dottie can usurp them, shooting Chris and fatally injuring Ansel. Then she points the gun at Joe and confesses that he is pregnant. Joe looks enthusiastic and happy about this news and approaches Dottie minimally. Dottie puts her finger on the trigger. The movie ends.

In the United Kingdom , the film is only available from 18. In Germany, as in the USA, there were problems with the age rating. With the SPIO / JK release, the film was therefore not seriously endangering young people . Killer Joe was indexed on April 30, 2013.
criticism
In the New York Times , Manohla Dargis wrote that director Friedkin, despite his proven talent for moving images of violence, does not find his rhythm here, with which the film shifts from realism to surrealistic exploitation and creates the feeling that what is happening on the screen has the upper hand retained over the direction instead of the other way around. On the occasion of a performance at the Berlin Fantasy Filmfest it was said that Friedkin "torments them (= the actors) to a crude juxtaposition of overacting and provinciality, dares a show with rape scenes and humiliation practices, throws the audience into a delirious frenzy"
