action

Kate and Phil move from Chicago to Los Angeles , where Phil got a good job in the advertising industry. To look after their newborn son, they employ the likeable Camilla as a nanny. However, Camilla has no good intentions because she wants to sacrifice the child to her tree god during a druidic ritual. On Camilla's evening off, her neighbor Ned Runcie follows unnoticed into the forest and watches as Camilla worships a tree naked. He is discovered and pursued by coyotes, from whom he flees to his house. After Runcie notifies the police, he leaves his neighbors Kate and Phil a message on the answering machine to warn them about Camilla. Then Ned escapes armed into the basement, where he then dies.

The next day, Phil listens to the answering machine on which two messages have been left. The first message comes from Molly Sheridan, whose daughter Lea (at the beginning of the film) was kidnapped by Camilla. Phil can only partially hear the second message from Ned because Camilla interrupts him. At a meeting with Molly Sheridan, she tells Phil about the kidnapping of her daughter. She also found out that the children of several of the Guardian Angel agency's clients have disappeared. The personal description of the nanny, which she asked for during the phone calls with the families, corresponds exactly to Camilla. Phil discovers that the same nanny is up to mischief in his house. He drives back home immediately and confronts Camilla with the allegations. He also plays her the second message from the answering machine.

After Camilla was expelled from the house by the parents, the child becomes very ill. The examination at the hospital shows that the child may not live long. Camilla suddenly appears at the child's bedside, who wants to take the child with her, but can be stopped by Phil. Kate and Phil escape the hospital with the child and seek shelter in their home. However, several coyotes are already waiting there to drive Phil with the child into the forest. Kate, also attacked by the animals, follows them in the jeep into the forest. Before Camilla can snatch the child from Phil's arms, she is rammed by the jeep, thrown between the trees and killed.

At the police station, Kate and Phil are not believed, as the police officers have not found a body in the forest, so there is no crime. So Phil decides to put an end to the ghost on his own. Armed with a chainsaw, he goes to the forest to find the tree to which Camilla has made child sacrifices over the years. With the help of the chainsaw, Phil begins to saw the tree, which, however, fights back bitterly. During the fight, the screams of the sacrificed children can be heard, whose faces are fused with the tree. Eventually Phil manages to destroy the tree. Meanwhile, his family, who are waiting for him at home, is attacked by Camilla. By sawing the tree, Camilla disintegrates at the same time into her individual parts and is thereby also destroyed.

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of April 27, 1990 that the film repeated numerous clichés of horror films such as curtains fluttering in the wind, strange music and others. Ebert suspected that William Friedkin, who had fought against the system for years, wanted to make a commercial film. The critic only praised the special effects and the camera work.

Richard Harrington wrote in the Washington Post on April 30, 1990 that the film was " surprisingly absurd ". The plot is " just silly ".

Awards

The film for Best Horror Film , Jenny Seagrove and Jack Hues for the score were nominated for the Saturn Award in 1991 .
