The Lion King (Original title: The Lion King ) is a computer-animated American film by Jon Favreau , produced by himself, Karen Gilchrist and Jeffrey Silver . Jeff Nathanson wrote the script . The film is a remake of the cartoon The Lion King from 1994 and stars Donald Glover , Seth Rogen , Chiwetel Ejiofor , Alfre Woodard , Billy Eichner , John Kani , John Oliver , Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and James Earl Jones , among others . Both the animals and the landscapes were created on the computer. The film came into German cinemas on July 17, 2019 and two days later in US cinemas.

action

The animals of the "Consecrated Land", which is ruled by lions, go to the King's Rock to see Simba, son of the wise lion king Mufasa. The shaman Rafiki, a mandrill, solemnly presents the lion cub to the animals. Only one person is not happy about the baby's birth: Mufasa's brother Scar, who was originally supposed to follow his brother himself and apparently stood in his shadow.

Some time later, Simba is a fun-loving little lion cub who looks up to his father and looks forward to his time as king. Mufasa rules wisely and justly and explains the eternal circle of life to his son. This says that the predators eat the prey, but after their death they turn into grass themselves, which serves as food for the prey. Thus all are one in the circle of life. Furthermore, Simba must respect all living beings. His uncle Scar, however, is still jealous and wants Simba's death. Apparently by mistake he tells him about an elephant cemetery, which, as intended, arouses Simba's curiosity. Together with his best friend Nala, he escapes their guardian Zazu, a hornbill and court master of the king, and leaves the consecrated land, which Mufasa had forbidden him. But they will soon get the receipt for it. The hyenas, led by Shenzi, who are enemies with the lions, attack them. At the last moment they are saved by Mufasa, who was informed by Zazu. Mufasa puts Simba in his conscience and explains to him that you shouldn't put yourself in unnecessary danger and that the great kings of the past would look down on you from the stars and one day show him the way, if he didn't know what to do. Scar allies himself with the hyenas and explains his intentions: he wants to overthrow his brother, kill Simba and usurp the throne. In return, he promises the eternally hungry hyenas food in abundance in the consecrated land. The next time he tries to murder Simba, he leads Simba into a ravine, makes him try to roar and runs away, under the pretext of fetching Mufasa, but gives the hyenas a sign. Suddenly the earth shakes. Simba is almost trampled by a wildebeest stampede that has been frightened by the hyenas, but is able to save herself on a bare tree. Scar informs Mufasa and he saves his son, but is himself in danger. After a successful rescue, Mufasa himself is carried away, but rescues himself on a rock face. Once at the top, he asks Scar for help, but Scar pushes him down instead. After this disaster, Simba finds his father's body and is deeply sad. Scar accuses him of the death of Mufasa and advises him to run away and not return. Scar lets the hyenas loose on him, but Simba escapes. You keep it from him. Scar tells the lionesses that he was too late to save the two of them, declares himself king and lets lions and hyenas live together. Simba runs through the desert, collapses exhausted and meets two good-humored fellows, the meerkat Timon and the warthog Pumbaa. They live according to their own rules in an oasis with numerous friends, take Simba in with them and teach him their philosophy of life "Hakuna Matata", "no worries".

Some time later, Simba has grown into a magnificent lion and is enjoying his life to the full. Timon and Pumbaa explain to him that they don't believe in the “eternal circle” and that the prey is simply eaten by the hunters. Everyone should just live the way they want. Meanwhile, the situation in the Consecrated Land has deteriorated dramatically. Scar rules tyrannically and everything is just a desolate wasteland. There is hardly any prey left as Scar and his hyenas kill everything and the herds have therefore moved on. He wants to make Simba's mother Sarabi, with whom he was apparently once in love, his queen, but she firmly refuses. Nala can no longer bear it and secretly flees to seek help. When she attacks Timon and Pumbaa on the hunt, Simba intervenes, but recognizes them again and both are very happy to see them again. He introduces her to his friends. Nala wants to return home with Simba so that he can regain his rightful place, but Simba shows her the area first. The friendship between the two eventually turns into love. When Nala tells Simba of Scar's bad rule, Simba refuses to return as he is satisfied with his new life and still considers Mufasa's death to be his fault. Nala is very disappointed and runs away. When Simba continues walking, he meets Rafiki, who has already found out that he is still alive. Rafiki shows Simba that his father lives on in him. When Simba, who considers himself a nobody, looks at the night sky, a large thundercloud appears, of which his father's voice speaks to him. Mufasa's voice tells him that he was proud to have him as a son and to remember who he is and must take his place as king. Simba becomes aware of his responsibility. He has to face his past and makes his way back together with Nala. When they get home, they are joined by Timon and Pumbaa, who have reconsidered their attitude and want to stand by Simba. They use a diversionary maneuver to lure the hyenas away so that Nala can round up the lionesses and confront Simba Scar. Witnessing an altercation between Scar and Sarabi, he reveals himself and orders Scar to abdicate or fight. Scar turns the tables and again orders Simba to admit the guilt for Mufasa's death, which Simba does. Scar drives Simba to the edge of the King's Rock, where Simba slips and hangs helplessly in front of him like Mufasa once did. Lightning strikes below and a great fire spreads. Scar has planned the same fate for Simba as Mufasas. He tells Simba the truth that he is Mufasa's killer. In addition, he accidentally betrays himself beforehand when he says he looked Mufasa in the eye, which reveals his lie that he was too late. Furious with rage, Simba frees himself from his situation. Then it comes to the final. Scar lets the hyenas loose on Simba and flees. The lionesses rush into the fight, in which Zazu, Timon, Pumbaa and finally Rafiki also participate. Shenzi wants to eat Nala, just like when she attacked the elephant cemetery, but is defeated by her after a fight. Simba places Scar on the top of King's Rock, where Scar blames the hyenas for everything. He asks for mercy, apologizes and Simba spares his life. He wants Scar to run away and Scar seems to see this, but suddenly throws embers in his face. A dramatic battle breaks out between the two, which ends in Simba's favor when Scar falls from King's Rock. He survives, but the hyenas take revenge and eat him. Rain puts out the fire. After defeating Scar, Simba follows in his father's footsteps and now rules the Sacred Land with Nala at his side. When the kingdom recovers from Scar's tyranny, Simba and Nala become parents themselves, and Rafiki presents the baby just as Simba once did. The circle of life closes again.

production

Pre-production

On September 28, 2016, Disney announced a remake of the cartoon classic The Lion King , directed by Jon Favreau , who was already remaking a Disney classic with The Jungle Book . On October 13, it was confirmed that Jeff Nathanson would write the script. In November Favreau stated in an interview with ComingSoon.net that the virtual cinematography technology he used in The Jungle Book would be used increasingly in The Lion King . Although The Lion King was reported as a real-life film in the media , photo-realistic animation is actually used here. Disney also did not refer to the project as live action, just stated that it would follow the "technologically groundbreaking" approach of The Jungle Book .

Staff and cast

In mid-February 2017, Donald Glover was confirmed as the spokesman for the main character Simba , while James Earl Jones will speak again Mufasa , whom he has already voiced in the original. On April 25, the cast was expanded to include Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen as Timon and Pumbaa . John Oliver followed on July 10th as Zazu , a red beaked Toko and Mufasa's advisor. On August 7, it was announced that Alfre Woodard was confirmed as Simba's mother, Sarabi , while John Kani lends his voice to the mandrill and shaman Rafiki . The singer Beyoncé Knowles-Carter added the cast as the female lead Nala and Chiwetel Ejiofor as the antagonist Scar on November 1st . In addition, Eric André , Florence Kasumba and Keegan-Michael Key act as the hyenas Azizi , Shenzi and Kamari , Scar's henchmen, and JD McCrary will be heard as the young Simba and Shahadi Wright Joseph as the young Nala .

Film music and filming

As with the original film from 1994, Hans Zimmer composed the film music again. Elton John also composed two new songs for the soundtrack. Five of the songs were produced by Pharrell Williams . Spirit , the movie's theme song, was written by Beyoncé with IIya Salmanzadeh and Timothy McKenzie and released on the night of the film's world premiere. The album for the film itself, which includes Spirit , was released for download on July 11, 2019 by Walt Disney Records and also in physical form on July 19, 2019. Spirit is also included on the album The Lion King: The Gift , which was produced by Beyoncé.

Filming began on a blue screen stage in Los Angeles , California in the summer of 2017 . Only the first setting of the film was recorded photographically in Africa, the rest consists of 1490 rendered settings.

Marketing and Publishing

In December 2017, the first photos that were taken during the shooting were presented. The first teaser trailer and the first teaser poster were published on November 22, 2018 . The trailer was viewed around 224.6 million times within the first 24 hours. This makes it the second most viewed trailer after Avengers: Infinity War with 230 million views (as of November 25, 2018). The first official poster and another teaser appeared on February 24, 2019 during the Oscar ceremony . An audio book of the novel adaptation (read by Steffen Groth ) was published on July 8, 2019 by Hörverlag - ISBN 978-3844532968 .

The world premiere took place on July 9, 2019 at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood. The film is due to open in German cinemas on July 17, 2019 and two days later in US cinemas.

synchronization

The synchronization was done by FFS Film- & Fernseh-Synchron in Berlin . Axel Malzacher wrote the dialogue book and directed the dialogue. The lyrics were edited by Nina Schneider based on the German lyrics by Frank Lenart from 1994. The musical recordings and arrangements took place in the Jamzone Studios in Munich under the direction of Thomas Amper .

Differences to the original

The new edition of The Lion King introduces the character of a puppy dog , which did not appear in the 1994 film. The role is spoken by Amy Sedaris in the original . In the original the three hyenas are called Shenzi, Banzai and Ed, in the remake Shenzi, Azizi and Kamari. The two new names, like Shenzi, have a meaning in Swahili . While Shenzi means "wild" in Swahili, Azizi is Swahili for "moonlight" and Kamari for "powerful".

reception

Reviews

The film received mixed reviews: On the Rotten Tomatoes website , the film - based on 413 reviews - has a popularity rating of 53% and an average rating of 5.99 out of 10 points. Metacritic gave the film an average of 55 out of 100 possible points based on 54 reviews. While the optics and thus the performance of the CGI animators are praised, a lack of emotionality in particular is criticized more often than the cartoon.

Anna Wollner wrote on the SWR3 homepage : “But despite all the nostalgia and the breathtaking pictures, the spark does not want to jump over. Everything looks perfect, too perfect. One thing above all gets lost: the emotionality. The Lion King is a visual spectacle. Unfortunately without a heart. ”The film received a rating of 3 out of 5“ Elks ”.

On the other hand, the editorial team of Filmstarts.de judged : “So he and his animators have now managed the amazing feat of depicting the animals in such a photo-realistic manner that commentators initially speculated after the first published pictures whether it was the new The Lion King could not possibly be a real film after all. [...] Pictures to astonish and great emotions suppress any thought of any CGI effects, that was what made the cartoon classic from 1994 and this magic now also exudes the new edition. [...] With great narrative caution, but all the more technical courage, Jon Favreau sets new standards in animation cinema with the best of the current Disney remakes so far, without losing (too much) of the unattainable charm of the original. ”With a 4 , 5-star rating (out of a maximum of 5 stars), the film is rated as excellent.

However, Tjark Lorenzen on netzwelt.de criticized: “With The Lion King , Disney offers viewers photo-realistic images, but the film remains surprisingly cold and emotionless. [...] Ultimately, "The Lion King" leaves you with a shrug. From a technical point of view, the film cannot be blamed for anything and so it cuts a fine figure on the big screen. Apart from that, one is looking for the added value of this remake, which doesn't dare to do anything and yet makes too many wrong decisions.

And Filmfutter.de also stated: “An even bigger problem with the remake is that it loses its emotionality in favor of the effects. A cartoon has more freedom in animating the emotions in the animals' faces, while its photorealistic representation is restrictive in this regard, so that the conveying of the feelings is left much more to the speakers. They all do their best, but unfortunately what they hear does not always go hand in hand with what they see. The original cartoon is full of great emotions - joy, love, sadness, fear, lust for life. Mufasa's death destroyed me emotionally as a child. For all its optical charms, the new infusion appears colder and more distant. ”The film received 3 out of 5 possible stars.

Sven Wiebeck from Cinema magazine said: “Although the action-packed real-life version lacks the emotional power of the 94 original, which may be due to the aforementioned magic, Timon and Pumbaa, the stars of the film back then, are often even funnier than 25 years ago. [...] Well roared Favreau: The new edition of the Disney classic looks damn good, but it doesn't degenerate into a photo slideshow from the last vacation in Africa. "

Mariana Jentsch also gave a positive verdict on Kino.de : “The new edition of The Lion King is an absolute must not only for fans of the classic cartoon. With breathtaking CGI technology, director Jon Favreau brings the world of Mufasa, Simba and Co. to life and presents us with a Disney classic at animal documentation level. In addition, young and old are entertained with witty dialogues, emotional depth, modern wit and the classic Disney songs, even a good portion of action is not missing here. For real Disney fans there is even a film reference as the icing on the cake, but you have to see it yourself in the cinema! "

In contrast, Till Kadritzke said on Spiegel Online : “The visually fascinating musical about Simba adheres strictly to the cartoon classics. But that is also his problem. [...] It's fascinating because the animals, animated with the latest CGI technology, actually look like in the ubiquitous nature documentaries [...]: A cartoon classic is literally brought to life here. But this new aesthetic is also irritating because director Jon Favreau otherwise strictly adheres to the template. The "real" animals begin to speak and sing, [...]. That makes the new Lion King a precarious balancing act right from the start, between the serious naturalism of computer animation and the relaxed atmosphere of the Disney musical, which is not aiming at realism, but rather at excess and entertainment. [...] Two "real" lions stare at each other while two pop stars perform a hit on the soundtrack. [...] As promising as the call resounded through the Serengeti at the beginning of the film, so much of what follows sounds dissonant. "

Gross profit

The film's worldwide revenue from theatrical screenings is $ 1.66 billion, making it the 2nd most successful film of 2019 . It is in 7th place in the list of the world's most successful films of all time (as of August 8, 2020). In Germany, the film recorded 5,590,297 visitors, placing it in second place in the 2019 annual charts .
