Andrew R. Jones

Andrew "Andy" R. Jones (born December 16, 1972 in San Francisco , California ) is an American animator who won an Oscar in 2010 for the film Avatar - Departure for Pandora and in 2017 for The Jungle Book .

Life

He grew up in Palos Verdes near Los Angeles . He then studied at the University of California, Los Angeles and made his 1995 degree in design and media art in the University of California belonging to School of the Arts and Architecture . During his studies he worked for a small company in Brentwood , where he was also employed as a draftsman after graduating. In 1996 he moved to the special effects company Digital Domain, founded in 1993 by Scott Ross, James Cameron and Stan Winston . There he initially worked on various commercial projects before joining Titanic in 1997 as head of animation. He then moved to Centropolis Effects , where he was the animation director for the film Godzilla .

In 2001, the company Square USA made the first fully computer-animated film with a largely realistic representation of people, Final Fantasy: The Powers in You . In 2004 he worked on I, Robot , for which he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Visual Effects in 2005 along with John Nelson, Joe Letteri and Erik Nash . In the years that followed, Superman Returns , In My Heaven and Avatar - Departure for Pandora followed , for which he received the Oscar for Best Visual Effects in 2010 along with Joe Letteri, Stephen Rosenbaum and Richard Baneham . In 2011 he made the short film Parallel , in which he directed, wrote the screenplay and was responsible for the camera and digital effects. In 2017 he won a second Oscar for his work on The Jungle Book .

He is married with two children and currently lives in Fürigen , Switzerland .
