history

Palos Verdes was originally populated by the Tongva Indian tribe . They were discovered and described by the Portuguese explorer Juan Cabrillo in 1542. The country later became part of Spain. In 1784 Palos Verdes became part of the 305 km² Rancho San Pedro , which stretched north and east from Palos Verdes and which the Spanish soldier Juan Jose Dominguez was given by the Spanish Kingdom. Don Jose Dolores Sepulveda, who also owned land in this region, acquired a large part of Rancho San Pedro in 1827, which roughly corresponds to the Palos Verdes peninsula. He named this area Rancho de los Palos Verdes ( ranch / pasture of green trees ). After further changes of ownership, the land went to investors from New York towards the end of the 19th century, who built horse farms and housing developments on the peninsula. Palos Verdes Estates was the first city to be established here. It was also one of the first in the Los Angeles area to be designed entirely on the drawing board ( planned city ).
