Brentwood is a district in the west of the Californian city of Los Angeles ( USA ) with - according to the Los Angeles Almanac  - just under 42,000 inhabitants ( census in 2000).

The land on which the Brentwood district extends belonged to Rancho San Vicente y Santa Monica until the second half of the 19th century . The nucleus for the later part of the city was the settlement of the Sawtelle Veterans Home , a nursing home for disabled veterans of the US Army near what is now Wilshire Boulevard in 1887. The settlement, which developed in the immediate vicinity of the west gate of the facility, initially bore the Name Westgate . On June 14, 1916, Westgate was incorporated into Los Angeles. The old name lives on in the street name Westgate Boulevard . The district is known as a wealthy place to live.
