Stan Winston

Stan Winston (born April 7, 1946 in Richmond , Virginia , USA , † June 15, 2008 in Los Angeles , California , USA) was an American expert on special effects and make-up design, who worked in numerous Hollywood Productions became known. His creations include the creatures from the Terminator , Predator and Jurassic Park films.

Winston was also active as a director, making his debut in 1987 with the horror film The Halloween Monster .

life and work

Winston studied painting and sculpture. After working as a stand-up comedian in his native Virginia in his youth , he moved to Los Angeles in 1968 to become an actor. But when he didn't get any good role offers, he concentrated on a part-time job as a make-up assistant at the Disney studios. A few years later he received an Emmy Award in 1972 for the effects in the film Gargoyles , a second in 1974 for The Autobiography Of Miss Jane Pittman , on which he had worked with Rick Baker .

Over the next few years, Winston became increasingly successful and well known. For the Star Wars Holiday Special he designed the costumes for the Wookiees . In 1984 he worked on effects for James Cameron's Terminator and in 1986 Aliens - The Return , for which he received his first Oscar. This was followed by numerous award-winning effects work in films such as Predator , Terminator 2 - Judgment Day , Jurassic Park and Michael Jackson's Ghosts . Winston gained a reputation for being one of the leading and most innovative special effects designers in the world.

Winston's son Matt is an actor, best known for the role of the temporal agent Daniels in the series Star Trek: Enterprise .

Most recently, he worked as a Creature Effects Supervisor for the film Terminator: The Redemption , in which he also had a brief cameo. Winston was responsible for the special and mask effects in the first three Terminator films. He died during production in June 2008 - the film is dedicated to him.

Stan Winston died on June 15, 2008 with his family from a long history of cancer, known as multiple myeloma .

Awards (selection)

Winston has received an Oscar four times . He received the Saturn Award just as often . He won his first Oscar in 1987 for the effects in Aliens: The Return . He won the trophies twice in the categories of Best Visual Effects and Best Make-up for Terminator 2 - Reckoning Day in 1992. He won his last Oscar in 1994 for Jurassic Park .
