Terminator: The Redemption (Original: Terminator Salvation ) is an American science fiction film by the director Joseph " McG " McGinty Nichol, which was released on May 21, 2009 in the USA and on June 4, 2009 in German cinemas. The fourth installment in the Terminator series is the sequel to Terminator (1984), Terminator 2 - Judgment Day (1991) and Terminator 3 - Rise of the Machines (2003).

Terminator: The redemption was planned as the first part of a new trilogy, which did not materialize.

action

In 2003, the condemned murderer Marcus Wright gave his body to Cyberdyne Systems for research purposes. A year later, the Cyberdyne computer system Skynet perceives mankind as a threat to its existence and triggers a nuclear war.

The year 2018: A large part of humanity was wiped out by Skynet by the war, the survivors serve as work slaves or have joined individual resistance groups to fight against the rule of the machines.

During an attack on a Skynet satellite communications system, resistance fighter John Connor first found plans for the T-800, which he had long predicted, in an underground fortification. While Connor saves the plans underground, his fellow combatants are picked up by a harvester (a giant robot) above and dragged onto a carrier ship. Connor is the only one who manages to escape. Shortly thereafter, the former death row inmate Marcus Wright climbs out of the pit and is confused about his destroyed surroundings. Meanwhile, Connor goes to the resistance command submarine. There he learns of the discovery of a shortwave signal which apparently can be used to deactivate all Skynet machines within transmission range . Connor agrees to test the effect of the signal on various machines.

In the ruins of Los Angeles, Marcus meets young Kyle Reese, John Connor's father, and his companion, Star, a dumb child. Together they flee towards a base of human resistance. On the way there, Reese and the child are put by a harvester into a carrier ship with other human prisoners. Marcus manages to save himself and meets the pilot Blair Williams, who recently had to rescue herself from her crashing A10 Thunderbolt with the ejector seat . Marcus wants to go to Skynet headquarters to free his friends. Blair tells him about John Connor, who can help him, and Marcus agrees to come to Connor's base.

Connor is now testing the signal on a hydro robot, a robot that works in water. It works, and they want to test it on larger machines to be on the safe side. Even a flying hunter killer can be switched off by the signal in flight.

On the way to Connor's base, Blair and Marcus have to go through a field with magnetic mines, where Marcus is badly injured and it is revealed that he is a cyborg . The resistance fighters fear that he could be a new type of terminator. In the base, Marcus is chained and his metal body parts examined. It is found that Marcus is fundamentally different from the other terminators: he has a human heart and a human brain with an activated microchip. Marcus cannot believe his condition and protests that he is human. Since he saved Blair from being raped, she trusts his human side and frees him. In search of the escaped prisoner, John Connor is attacked by hydrobots, but Marcus comes to his aid. Connor is now convinced that Marcus is up to good things and asks him to look for Kyle Reese, captured by Skynet, and to inform him of his position.

As Skynet awaits the arrival of Marcus, the defenses let him get inside the fortress-like machine base, which lies in the devastated San Francisco . In the headquarters, Marcus deactivates the defenses to clear the way for Connor. Marcus' injuries and broken parts are healed and repaired by Skynet. Marcus learns from Skynet personally that the shutdown signal found was a trap to locate the resistance submarine by radio direction finding , which is destroyed by a hunter killer with a plasma weapon. Marcus' purpose was to infiltrate the resistance and find out its position, as well as lure John Connor inside Skynet. However, Marcus does not want to accept that, rips the Skynet microchip from the back of his head and flees.

Meanwhile, Connor is looking for his father Reese. However, Reese's position that Marcus sent to Connor from Skynet's memory was a trap and Connor is surprised by a ready-to-use and human-skinned T-800 (Model 101). Reese, held in another position, is able to break free.

Connor provides the nuclear fuel cells, which serve as the energy source for the T-800, with radio explosive charges. During a fight against the T-800, a metal rod pierces it. Marcus can save him and they fly out of the machine shop in a summoned helicopter. Star gives Connor the transmitter for the explosive charges in the fuel cells; this ignites them and the entire base is destroyed. In a safe place, John can be saved for now, but his heart cannot hold out much longer. Marcus wants to use his second chance and donate his healthy heart to Connor. Connor survives and Marcus dies as a human. While recovering, John informs the other resistance fighters via radio that this battle has been won, but the end of the war is still a long way off.

Producer / Director

The fourth installment in the Terminator series was based on a script by Michael Ferris and John Brancato and directed by McG . The film was produced by Moritz Borman , Derek Anderson, Victor Kubicek and Jeffrey Silver and co-produced by Peter D. Graves, Bahman Naraghi, Mario F. Kassar , Andrew G. Vajna , Joel B. Michaels, Dan Lin and Jeanne Allgood.

The screenwriters Ferris and Brancato were already involved in the third part of Terminator 3 - Rebellion of the Machines .

reception

Financial success

At a production cost of around $ 200 million, the film grossed $ 42.6 million on the weekend launch, which corresponds to an average revenue of around $ 12,000 per theater. It stayed just below the opening weekend of the previous film Terminator 3 , which grossed around two million dollars more (not adjusted for inflation). The worldwide box office total was around 371 million US dollars.

music

The composer Danny Elfman based the main theme on the first Terminator film, the music of which is by Brad Fiedel . Elfman completed the score with hard machine noises as well as fast strings and brass , the latter partly reminiscent of the Matrix soundtrack by Don Davis . In addition, the film music is sometimes quite epic as well as gentle and almost melancholy at the end, where piano tones are also used. Overall, Elfman's typical handwriting, which he perfected primarily through his long-term collaboration with Tim Burton , is barely recognizable. His style only shines in a few places.

Continuation plans

Terminator: Redemption was planned by the Halcyon Company as the start of a new trilogy. After the film brought in a rather moderate box office, especially in the US, the company ran into financial problems and sold the rights to Pacificor . With the sale of the rights, the trilogy plans with Christian Bale were also put on hold.

Instead, the start of a new trilogy with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the role of T-800 was planned for 2015. Shooting started on April 21, 2014. The first part is entitled Terminator: Genisys and was released in July 2015. The film remained without its own sequel. Terminator: Dark Fate (2019) follows on from part 2 and ignores all other Terminator films.

synchronization

The dubbing took place at FFS Film- & Fernseh-Synchron under the dialogue direction of Andreas Pollak.

Novels and comics about the film

Novels

After the fire of Timothy Zahn there is an official prequel to the film, which is set right before the plot of the fourth part. The plot revolves episodically on the one hand around two children named Kyle and Star who are on the lookout for Terminators, around a marine soldier who wants to keep his unit together and John and Kate Connor who are preparing their resistance team for an attack.

Comic

Terminator: Infinity by Simon Furman and Nigel Raynor also plays as a prequel before the fourth film and after Judgment Day from Terminator 3 , the plot is set in 2009 and revolves around John Connor, who a year after the death of Kate Crystal Peaks leaves to go to Los Angeles and meet other people there.

Video game implementation

In addition to the comics and novels by Timothy Zahn and Alan Dean Foster, a video game adaptation of the film for Xbox 360 , PlayStation 3 and the Microsoft Windows and Apple iOS operating systems was also released with the eponymous Terminator: The Redemption . The player takes on the role of the main character of the film, John Connor, from the so-called third-person perspective and relives the fight against the Skynet units. In terms of time, the game is a prequel to the film, which takes place two years before the events of the film plot in Los Angeles. The game comprises nine levels divided into sub-chapters and various game modes.
