Terminator 2 - Reckoning Day

Terminator: Dark Fate is a science fiction film by director Tim Miller , which was released in German and Austrian cinemas on October 24, 2019 and was released in the United States on November 1, 2019. It is the sixth film in the Terminator series and a direct sequel to the first two Terminator films. Parts three to five are ignored or viewed as part of alternative timelines.

For the film, James Cameron , who directed and scripted the first two Terminator films, returned as producer. This is the first time he has been involved in a Terminator film since 1991 . In economic terms, the film turned out to be a flop .

action

In 1998, three years after defeating the T-1000 and Skynet , John Connor and his mother Sarah are in Livingston , Guatemala , both believing that humanity has been saved. But Skynet had sent more terminators into the past, and a T-800 surprises them, kills John and disappears. Since then, Sarah has made it her calling to hunt down the Terminators who are sent into the past. Their arrival is announced to her every time by an unknown sender on her mobile phone.

22 years later, the young Daniella "Dani" Ramos in Mexico City lives a simple life with her brother and father, when another Terminator, the sophisticated Rev-9, is sent back through time. His mission is to kill Dani, who in the future will be the new leader of the people in the fight against the machines. But a protector was also sent back - the female soldier Grace, modified by implants . Shortly after their first contact with Rev-9, Dani and Grace meet the battle-hardened Sarah, who was also predicted by the anonymous tipster. Grace, who has never heard of John Connor in her future, distrusts Sarah and tries to protect Dani on her own. Since the cybernetic improvements put too much strain on her metabolism in the fight against Rev-9, she falls into a temporary coma so that Sarah can catch up with them again. It becomes apparent that Skynet will not exist in the future because of past events, but another AI called Legion , which will plunge humanity into chaos and trigger a global nuclear war. Therefore Sarah Connor decides to help the two escape from Rev-9. Grace uses Sarah's cell phone to find out where the tips are being sent from. The coordinates are the same ones that were tattooed on her in case of emergency. With the help of Daniella's uncle, the three women flee across the border to Laredo , Texas .

Rev-9, who has the shapeshifting ability, infiltrates the Mexican and American federal police, allowing the trio to be arrested at the Texas border. However, they break free and escape by helicopter. When they arrive in Texas, the anonymous tipster turns out to be the T-800 that killed John in 1998. After completing his assignment, he was stuck in the past. He now calls himself Carl, has developed a conscience and adopted a family. He decides to protect Dani. Together the four try to destroy Rev-9. Through high-level contact with Sarah in the military, they come into possession of EMP weapons and a transport aircraft with escort. During the escape, however, the EMP weapons are destroyed and the escort is switched off. In the final fight in a hydroelectric power station, Carl and Grace are able to throw the Rev-9 into a turbine, severely damaging it, but Grace is also severely wounded. With the Rev-9 still after Dani, Grace releases her power cell to destroy him for good, causing her to die. Thereupon Carl throws himself into a shaft with the Rev-9, where both are destroyed by the explosion of the energy cell.

Finally, Dani and Sarah watch a child playing with their parents in a playground - young Grace.

production

Arnold Schwarzenegger , here at San Diego Comic-Con , plays the Terminator again

In September 2017 it was announced that the sixth part of the film series was being directed by Tim Miller and that filming should begin in early 2018. The start of shooting was postponed several times. Ultimately, they started in June 2018 and took place in the Hungarian Komárom , among other places .

At San Diego Comic-Con International in July 2019, it was announced that Edward Furlong , who starred in Terminator 2 in 1991 as the young John Connor, will return.

The film music is composed by Junkie XL from the Netherlands . A first trailer was presented in May 2019. The film opened in German and Austrian cinemas on October 24, 2019 and in US cinemas on November 1, 2019.

Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the Terminator Carl , one of several T-800 "Model 101" that were sent back in time to kill John Connor. As with Terminator: Genisys , the shell made of human tissue that encloses its metal skeleton is years old compared to the Terminator models from the first films.

reception

So far, the film has won over 70 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics and has a Metascore of 54 out of 100 on Metacritic .

Special-interest magazine Neon Zombie wrote that the film “[functions] as both an epilogue and a prologue, creating a foundation on which a new Terminator universe can be built. Especially considering all the reinterpretations of the past, this is perhaps the greatest compliment you can give the film. "

The film service judges that it is a further part of the "narrative long exhausted film series that uses the old patterns with tired self-referential jokes". The action scenes are "interchangeable" and keep "the thin narrative thread alive".

The cost of producing the film of $ 185 million is offset by worldwide cinema revenues of $ 260.6 million, making it an economic flop. The film recorded 449,853 visitors in Germany.

synchronization

The German synchronization was based on a dialogue book and the dialogue direction by Björn Schalla on behalf of Film- & Fernseh-Synchron . For the first time, Bernd Egger spoke in favor of the German dubbed version as the T-800, since Schwarzenegger's regular spokesman Thomas Danneberg does not take on any further dub roles for health reasons.
