Neon Zombie , completely as Neon Zombie - The magazine for fantastic cinema and cinematic pop culture! is a German film magazine in the print sector, which is primarily dedicated to the genres of horror , science fiction and fantasy . It has been published since June 2013. The magazine is published by Markus Haage Medienverlag, based in Schöningen .

background

The magazine was founded by Markus Haage, who also acts as publisher and editor-in-chief and finances, produces and sells the magazine on his own. According to von Haage, the initial self-distribution would have been “completely unthinkable” just a few years ago and only possible thanks to the digital revolution, especially with regard to modern means of communication.

The first edition with an initial print run of 2,000 copies appeared on June 6, 2013 under the title “Der Zombie - The magazine for fantastic films and cinematic pop culture” and was sold out after just six days. The magazine was sold through its own online shop as well as through popular online trading platforms such as Amazon Marketplace . This first edition was even able to rise to 23rd place in the German-language bestseller list of all literary works by the online retailer Amazon . The website on which the print magazine was based went online in August 1999 and still exists today.

Due to its early success, the publisher and editor-in-chief Haage was invited in November 2013 to the NRW Journalists Day of the German Association of Journalists on the discussion topic of niche journalism (“Success in the niche”). The niche magazine originally envisaged thus received the attention of professional representatives of the German media landscape at an early stage.

As early as 2014, the format of the print magazine began to be transferred to other media. Mini-versions of the magazine were produced, which were included in the home media publications of popular genre classics and each treated individually with regard to content. These include DVD and Blu-ray releases for films such as John Carpenter's You Live From Studiocanal or Sam Raimi's Tanz der Teufel von Sony Pictures Entertainment .

Since 2015, under the title “Video Wahnsinn! - About the downfall of a culture ”as part of the print magazine, a documentation about German video library culture.

In 2017 the company began producing its own film edition under the title “Incredibly Fantastic Films!”. In the style of a classic American comic book cover from the 1950s, various genre films were released with new extras.

In January 2018 the name was changed to “Neon Zombie - The magazine for fantastic cinema and cinematic pop culture!”. According to the publisher Haage, the original spelling of "fantastic" goes back to the history of the fantasy genre and the original term for it, namely fantastic . The number of pages (without advertising) is currently 78 pages per issue.

Great importance is attached to cooperation with various film festivals and conventions. In 2016, “Neon Zombie” was one of the sponsors and promoters of the Cinestrange film festival in Braunschweig and of the “Weekend of Hell” (formerly “Weekend of Horrors”) in Oberhausen ; a horror convention with several thousand visitors, for which a special edition was created in 2015.

Content

The main focus is on film and series productions from Fantastic Cinema. This mainly includes the genres of horror, science fiction and fantasy. Cult classics from other genres or cross-genre films, such as Walter Hills The Warriors , are also discussed as the cover story. Films from the cinema year 1975 are in the foreground of the reporting, as this year is considered to be a turning point, especially for fantastic cinema, with the release of Steven Spielberg's The Jaws .

A special feature of the magazine are the large retrospectives, which extensively discuss a film or television series of the fantastic. In addition, the magazine is also devoted to film history and socio-cultural topics in the field of film. Reports on conventions, events and film festivals at home and abroad can be found as well as reports on film-historical events. Classical film reviews, on the other hand, represent a subordinate area, which in the print magazine are often dedicated to genre classics, B-movies or cult films .

The authors who have written articles for the magazine include scriptwriter and novelist Torsten Dewi and Marcus Stiglegger , Vice President of the DEKRA University for Media .

Reception in other media

In July 2013, the radio station Flux Fm reported on the production of the magazine in the province of Lower Saxony . In March 2014, the NDR reported on the television program DAS! . There were also further reports in online and print media.

The magazine of the filmmaker - Zoom wrote that one could wish that "even this magazine shares the fate of the eponymous undead and will always recur" . The local newspaper Paderborn am Sonntag stated that “in this case the horror does not relate to the quality, but to the content” . Puls , a radio broadcast by Bayerischer Rundfunk , described the print magazine as "a declaration of love for the horror and action films of the 80s and 90s" , even if some of the content seemed a bit redundant. The print magazine was discussed several times in the Perry Rhodan novel series and recommended to readers in the so-called Club News. It was said that the magazine had a “cheeky style” embedded in a “great look” and was made “lovingly” . The weblog Vollaufdiepresse.de even claimed that "the king of all geeks Sheldon Cooper would love it" [sic!], While Nerdkino came to the conclusion in their YouTube show that "Neon Zombie" was a "wonderful magazine with a great, casual yet informative writing and a basement full of background information ” .
