The program focuses on one guest who is interviewed live by the moderators on the “red sofa”. There is also a news overview, which is presented by the moderators at the beginning of the program. In addition, various thematic contributions - often appropriate to the guest - are shown in the program. As a rule, the contributions are related to northern Germany .

The program is broadcast daily between 6:45 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. There used to be complementary programs like DAS! travels and others. Until November 2006 there was also the program DAS! cooks from 2:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. This was eventually replaced by the news magazine NDR Aktuell . Several times a year, DAS! , for example on the port birthday or the shore party .

THE! in the afternoon

Until 2006 there was also the program DAS! in the afternoon , which began in the afternoon from Monday to Friday at 4:00 p.m. and ended at 5:10 p.m. The structure of the program was changed several times and lastly consisted of a guidebook called DAS! Service and THAT! live on the go . Today the show is called My Afternoon .

Trivia

The highest number of viewers to date was recorded by DAS! on December 5, 2013 with 1.29 million viewers and a rate of 5.1% nationwide. On this day, due to the storm “Xaver”, the planned guests were unloaded in favor of a monothematic broadcast on the weather situation. On June 30, 2006, the lowest attendance rate to date was measured at 90,000. This corresponded to a nationwide quota of 0.3% - at the same time Germany moved into the semi-finals of the soccer World Cup against Argentina .

In September 2012, the show came under fire after Jenny Elvers-Elbertzhagen made a sensational appearance on the show, in which she was obviously under the influence of alcohol . The moderator Bettina Tietjen must have noticed Elvers-Elbertzhagen's unusual behavior before the interview began, say critics. But she continued the conversation undeterred. There was criticism from supporters of Elvers-Elbertzhagen that the NDR even shot or broadcast this program. At the request of the Elvers-Elbertzhagen family, the NDR requested that the talk show recordings on YouTube be blocked . This lock was not upheld; not even from other video portals. In 2014 and 2018 Elvers returned to the “red sofa”.

The DAS! Broadcast on March 14, 2013 with Katja Riemann also triggered a lot of media coverage. The actress let the presenter Hinnerk Baumgarten appear very taciturn and with crossed arms throughout the program. The Spiegel author Stefan Niggemeier described the program as a “cruel car accident in slow motion”, in which one does not want to look, but also cannot look away. According to Niggemeier, it was a clash between a "difficult actress and an overwhelmed moderator".
