Rainer Sass (born April 25, 1954 in Stade ) is a German presenter , television chef , entrepreneur and author of cookbooks .

Life

Rainer Sass grew up with four brothers in Stade. The father was a waiter and the mother a clerk. After finishing school, Sass first completed a commercial apprenticeship in a car dealership before moving to the insurance industry, where he is still a full-time self-employed insurance salesman. In addition, he discovered his passion for cooking, the basic concepts of which he taught himself autodidactically and then deepened during internships with the chefs Eckart Witzigmann in Munich ( aubergine ) and Hans-Peter Wodarz in Wiesbaden ( Die Ente vom Lehel ).

Sass owes his first contact with the public broadcaster NDR to an accident in 1984. In his capacity as press spokesman for the Stade volunteer fire department , he fell next to the jumping mat during a practice jump and was seriously injured. With the help of the radio reporter Ludger Pooth, who reported on him, Sass was able to present his recipes through persistent commitment, initially on NDR 2 , and from 1989 onwards also on NDR television . Finally, with the programs DAS! Schmeckt and the Rainer Sass Kochshow (2003), he received television formats specially tailored to him. In September and October 2006 he also presented the one-hour cooking program Rainer's Friends in the evening program of the NDR . In 2007, Rainer Sass was then regularly seen in the half-hour NDR program Sass - Die Kochshow , in which, as previously in the Rainer Sass Kochshow , he was out and about with a mobile kitchen and mostly prepared his dishes outdoors. Since December 2009, Sass has presented himself on his home broadcaster as the “people's cook” in the Wünsch Dir Sass series . Here he helps hobby cooks from the NDR broadcasting area to fulfill their long-cherished culinary wishes. In the meantime, Sass was also part of the cooking crew at Kerners Köche (until February 2006) and thus gained nationwide fame. On October 2, 2009 he had a comeback with Kerner's successor in the show Lanz cooks .

His loud, casual and unmistakably North German style of moderation ("Sassomat"), which Sass also knows how to combine with a certain acting talent, has earned him a loyal fan base, but it is not without controversy. While his followers praise Sass' relaxed manner, with which he presents his recipes, never at a loss for a slogan, his critics find this style inappropriate and garish.

Sass is a member of the SPD . As a representative of the State of Lower Saxony , he was a member of the 12th and 16th Federal Assemblies for his party in 2004 and 2017 .

Sass has been married to Antje Sass since 1974.
