A cooking show is a radio or television show that is primarily about recipes and cooking. In addition, household tips are given and personal discussions are held.

Radio

A radio cook is a person who naturally describes a dish and its preparation in words in a radio broadcast . Since the listener cannot follow this at least visually, it is all the more elementary to give him an acoustic impression of the nature of the ingredients and their further processing, for example.

history

In the US, the history of cooking radio shows is closely tied to the promotion of certain products. One of the first cooking shows to be broadcast over the radio, which at the same time developed into one of the most famous American radio shows, was the one with the fictional character Betty Crocker . Washburn Crosby Company, the forerunner of General Mills , decided in the fall of 1924 to establish a radio cookery show with this character and acquired a radio station for it that could be received in a region from California via Illinois to Tennessee. On October 2, 1924, the first radio cookery program was broadcast under the title Good Food . Almost a year later, on September 21, cooking programs began to be broadcast throughout the United States. Susan Marks rates this step as courageous: The number of radio owners had increased from 5000 in 1920 to 2.5 million in 1924, but the radio was neither part of the standard equipment of a household nor was the benefit of radio advertising proven. However, it quickly became apparent that far more potential customers could be reached via radio broadcasts than via even the best-selling newspapers.

The Betty Crocker Cooking School of the Air developed from the original radio broadcast , a cooking school broadcast over the radio. Many listeners actively participated in this cooking show, the beginning of which attracted attention across the United States. In the first year no fewer than 47,000 listeners registered as students of this cooking show, in 1933 there were already 250,000. Those who signed up received a questionnaire about the recipes, which was returned to the Washburn Crosby Company along with the retailer's signature confirming that the student cook was buying flour from the company. In this way, the cookery students earned their diploma at the graduation ceremony broadcast once a year.

Since 1927 Marjorie Husted has been responsible for the programs, not only writing the programs, but occasionally also moderating them. On October 5th, 1927, in one of the first broadcasts for which she was responsible, she addressed her audience with the following words:

“I like to introduce myself when I speak here. I can see the seasoned housewife peeling potatoes or doing other work as she listens for some little advice that breaks the monotony of the old routine. I see deeply involved mothers of young children, grandmothers, brides and young housewives and those who can no longer get out, who are bedridden or need help and who keep telling me how much they are waiting for our show ... is it's not wonderful that no matter where you are, we can meet to discuss things that interest us all. A radio does not tolerate time or distance restrictions. It wasn't that many years ago when we had to meet neighbors, maybe while chatting over the fence, or when we had to wait for a club meeting or a sewing circle to exchange recipes. But today, even though I'm miles away, I can talk to them and radio listeners in Massachusetts can exchange ideas with radio listeners in California. "

Examples of radio kitchen

Examples of radio chefs include Marco Krainer , who is known in Austria for the radio program “Cooking on the Radio” on the Austrian regional broadcaster “Radio Kärnten” ( ORF ) and throughout German-speaking through appearances on TV in various cooking programs, or Helmut Gote , who works as a freelance worker for the WDR radio with the regular contributions "Simply Gote!" appears on WDR 2 . On this channel there is also a regular comedy recording as a parody of cooking programs with the title “Tim Meal Cooks”. The cook Ulla Scholz cooks live weekly on WDR 4 in the program "Ulla's recipe for success".

watch TV

The first cooking program on television was broadcast on the BBC on January 21, 1937 from 9:25 a.m. shortly after the start of the partly still experimental program operations in Great Britain . The French chef and cookbook author Marcel Boulestin , who became known in England for his cookbooks on French cuisine, showed how to prepare an omelette as part of a five-course menu in a quarter of an hour . The series was broadcast under the title Cook's night out (The cook has an exit) until 1939 and, in addition to the preparation of dishes from classic French cuisine, also showed simpler dishes such as salads, spring vegetables or stews.

German television broadcasts

Clemens Wilmenrod (1906–1967) was a German actor and from 1953 the first German television chef. Wilmenrod is considered to be the inventor of Hawaii Toast , Arabian Horsemeat and Stuffed Strawberries . He is also said to have made the rum pot popular in southern and western Germany. It also allegedly made the turkey a typical Christmas roast in Germany. Wilmenrod had no training as a cook. The NWDR broadcast the fifteen-minute program every two weeks from February 20, 1953 (monthly from 1957) on Friday evening at 9:30 p.m., i.e. at prime time. 185 episodes had been produced by the time it was canceled in May 1964. Wilmenrod initially greeted his audience with the sentence “You dear, cute people”, later it became “Dear friends in Lucullus” and finally “Dear connoisseur community”.

The Bayerische Rundfunk produced his first cooking shows with the popular operetta composer and actor Ludwig Schmidseder as the first TV chef Bavaria.

Was one of the longest-running cooking programs on German television what the grandmother still knew from SWR , which aired from 1982 to 2006, and since 1988 current broadcast service time: Sightseeing of the WDR . The oldest cooking show on German television is Hessen à la carte , which has been broadcast since 1981.

Between 1958 and 1983, GDR television produced around 650 episodes of the program Der Fernsehkoch Recommends with Kurt Drummer . The popularity of the show resulted from the fact that drummers reacted flexibly to the sometimes tense supply situation and adjusted their recipes accordingly. The situation was similar with the show Tip des Fischkochs with Rudolf Kroboth (1960–1972), which was launched solely to provide viewers with ideas about what can be prepared from canned fish. These, imported in large quantities from the Soviet Union, initially remained slow , as they were only labeled in Russian.

In 2007, the “Best Cooking Show” category was awarded by the German Television Prize for the only time . In support to set up this new category, the jury chairman was Klaudia Wick to: ". Seriös made life coaching via television and cooking on all channels are the vast TV trends and audience magnet in the past television year," The so far the only winners were the series The perfect Dinner , Lafer were also nominated at the time ! Lights! Delicious! and it doesn't taste good, you can't get it with Tim Mälzer .

American television broadcasts

Julia Child (1988)

Julia Child is one of the most famous TV chefs in the USA . Together with MFK Fisher , Craig Claiborne and James Beard, she is considered to be one of the personalities who significantly influenced American culinary art and food culture between 1930 and 1970 . Her cooking program The French Chef , which was broadcast for the first time in 1963 and familiarized an American audience of millions with French cuisine and its cooking techniques, was a major influence . In 2009 the film comedy Julie & Julia by Nora Ephron was released , which tells the life story of Julia Child, at the same time underlining the importance of the show in the USA. Julia Child was played by Meryl Streep in this film .

Since the second half of the 1990s, the popularity of cooking shows has steadily increased in the USA. Emeril Lagasse pioneered this fashion trend with his show Emeril Live . The television group Food Network took advantage of this increased audience interest and put a number of new shows on the air. The well-known TV chef Martha Stewart responded with new series and the publication of magazines, cookbooks and branded articles.
