The perfect dinner or the perfect celebrity dinner or the perfect professional dinner is a German cooking show that is produced for the TV station VOX . Repetitions of The Perfect Dinner are also broadcast on the special-interest channel RTL Living . Repetitions of The Perfect Celebrity Dinner were initially shown on RTL Nitro and later on Super RTL .

The concept is based on the British television series Come Dine with Me produced by ITV Studios for Channel 4 .

The first broadcast of the first episode of The Perfect Dinner took place after a pilot broadcast in November 2005 on March 6, 2006 on VOX. From Monday to Friday, the pre-evening program shows a compilation of one day each, in which one of the candidates is shown shopping, decorating the table, cooking, receiving the guests unknown at the beginning of the week and the course of the dinner . In between, the guests give comments on what they have experienced, which end in a reason for the rating. The 1000th program was broadcast from Berlin on February 3, 2010; the 2000th episode on February 3rd, 2014 from Munich, the 2763th episode on March 1st, 2017 broadcast from the Ruhr area.

There is one participant per working day of the broadcast week, usually five, in weeks with public holidays sometimes fewer. The candidates for a broadcast week come from a city or at least nearby cities. The candidates are invited one after the other to their home by one of the participants in order to serve them a home-cooked three-course menu .

The goal is to host a perfect dinner as the perfect host. In order to determine who achieved this goal or who came closest to it, the host is evaluated at the end by each of the other candidates. The number of points from 0 to 10 per appraiser depends not only on the prepared food, but also on the drinks served, the table decorations and the quality of the host. For the perfect dinner there would be a maximum of 40 points (4 evaluations of 10 points).

On March 9, 2009 the rating system was changed. Since then, 0 to 10 points have been awarded for the food and also 0 to 10 points for "decoration and ambience", so that a candidate could ideally receive 80 points (4 evaluations of 20 points) for his perfect dinner. This rating system was dropped again on August 17, 2009 without giving any reason.

The ratings are initially only known to viewers. In the days that followed, the other guests would entertain their fellow candidates. The winner is the one who had the most points at the end of the week. He receives a cash prize of 3,000 euros; if the points are equal, the prize is shared. The other participants do not win anything.

One condition to which the participants have to submit is that as little as possible of the menu, which consists of exactly three courses, should be prepared, it should be prepared and presented in front of the camera.

The episodes in the week from December 14th to 18th, 2009 were called “The perfect dinner in a dressing gown”. After the meal, a guest was drawn to stay with the respective host. The sleeping guest is not rated until the next morning and also includes the breakfast that the host prepares for him. Since spring 2011 there have been further episodes “in the dressing gown” at irregular intervals. Since 2012, another irregular variant has been broadcast under the title “Who is the professional?” In which a professional chef competes against ambitious amateur chefs under a false name.

Stylistic devices

The camera observes the shopping, the preparatory work, the cooking and the course of the menu itself. In addition, the candidates are interviewed independently of one another. This is primarily about the quality of the food, but also about assessments of the respective host, his apartment and the other participants. While the host is finishing the main course, the guests should visit the apartment together with the camera so that they can get a glimpse of the host's private life. For this purpose, the hosts are given the opportunity at the beginning to present themselves based on their facility. At the same time, the guests are asked to speculate about the host's apartment, which is then often cut with the real images as a contrast. These sequences are cut as interview scenes. In addition, the broadcast is commented on by speaker Daniel Werner with a distinctly ironic undertone. The comments are written by different authors.

Since February 4, 2008, Vox has been broadcasting its programs in 16: 9 widescreen format .

The perfect celebrity dinner

Basics

As a spin-off of The Perfect Dinner , Vox has been broadcasting The Perfect Celebrity Dinner since August 2006 . The hosts are four celebrities each (sometimes individual candidates are supported by another celebrity), who usually invite guests to dinner in their private apartments. The winner receives a cash prize that they donate to a charitable institution of their choice.

In contrast to The Perfect Dinner , an episode does not consist of several individual episodes that are shown on consecutive days. Instead, the footage shot at the individual dinners is cut into a single episode. This was only deviated from in the first episode, in which five instead of four celebrities took part, and which ran from August 21 to 25, 2006 in five parts on the slot for The Perfect Dinner .

The perfect celebrity dinner initially had a fixed weekly slot on Sunday evening at Vox. It was later switched to a biweekly and finally to an irregular broadcast rhythm. Now only a few new episodes are shown each year.

If the cast was initially mixed and brought together celebrities who otherwise have little or nothing to do with one another professionally, the concept increasingly changed in the direction of specializing the individual episodes on a homogeneous group of candidates. Since 2015, almost only such “special” episodes have been broadcast: The group of participants is made up of celebrities who are already known to viewers in this constellation, mostly from another format of private television. Since 2017 only "jungle special" episodes with participants of the current season of the RTL show I am a star - get me out of here! produced.

The perfect professional dinner - top chefs

Basics

In August 2015, the episode The Perfect Celebrity Dinner - Top Chefs was broadcast, in which the circle of candidates consisted exclusively of well-known professional chefs. It was about Christian Henze , Sybille Schönberger , Kolja Kleeberg and Attila Hildmann .

The concept of top chefs among themselves was relaunched in January 2017, now as a separate spin-off under the title The Perfect Professional Dinner . The top chefs episode of the celebrity dinner is now viewed by VOX as the first episode of the professional dinner despite the originally different classification and is also broadcast as part of this series if it is repeated.

The participants in The Perfect Professional Dinner are each four professional chefs, from the prominent TV chef to the top international chef who has been awarded three Michelin stars . They usually receive their colleagues in their private houses or apartments. For the preparation of the menus they mainly use their private kitchens, but often use the infrastructure of their restaurants to prepare individual courses or components and get help from their kitchen and sometimes service staff.

The participants are asked in individual and group interviews how they liked the evening hosted by the respective host, but unlike The Perfect Dinner and The Perfect Celebrity Dinner , there is no evaluation system and therefore no winners. An exception is the first episode (originally broadcast as part of the celebrity dinner series) in which the four restaurateurs involved - based on the “pay what you want” principle - were each asked how much money they would spend on the menu would have been willing to have been a paying customer at your host's restaurant.
