procedure
The aim of the casting show was to discover a talented vocalist whose talent is referred to as the “X Factor” by the hosting television station. The prize was a contract with the record company Sony Music . A season extended over four phases, which were called "Casting", "Bootcamp", "Jury House" and "Liveshows". The applicants were divided into three or four categories. Each jury member took on one of the categories as a mentor to the applicants until the end of the season. In the casting phase, all candidates had to audition on a stage in front of the audience and the jury. The group of those who made progress was reduced again in the joint boot camp phase. The third phase was the jury house, in which each mentor selected his best candidates, with whom he competed against the other participants in the subsequent live shows. The remaining participants present songs in the live shows, most of which were selected by the mentor. In the live shows of the first two seasons, the two candidates with the fewest audience votes had to perform a song of their own choosing in a so-called vocal duel, after which the jury decided with a simple majority which of the two would get ahead. Among the best three participants - in the third season, however, among all live show participants - only the viewers decided on progress and the winner.
Season 1 (2010)
Although Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland had already acquired the rights to “The X Factor” in 2006, according to RTL entertainment director Tom Sänger, it did not produce its first season until 2010. In order to attract viewers, the first two programs were shown on August 20 and 21, 2010 on the broad-reach RTL broadcaster . The rest of the episodes could be seen on VOX . The jury consisted of Sarah Connor , Till Brönner and George Glueck , the moderator was Jochen Schropp .

First phase: the casting
Around 19,000 applicants competed in one of three categories for the casting. At the end of the auditions, the categories were assigned to the jurors as follows:
- Solo singer 16–24 years: mentor Sarah Connor
- Solo singers from 25 years: mentor Till Brönner
- Groups and duets: Mentor George Glueck
Second phase: the boot camp
Around 120 acts made it into the second phase of X-Factor. Each jury member supervised one of the three categories and their participants as a mentor together with a well-known musician. Sarah Connor was supported by the singer Larsito from Culcha Candela , Till Brönner was supported by the music producer Mousse T. and George Glueck by the former “ Destiny's Child ” member Kelly Rowland . A total of 18 acts, six per jury member, made it into the jury house.
Third phase: the jury house
In the third phase, each of the mentors selected the three best participants from the six remaining participants in their category, who should compete for them in the live shows. While the producer George Glueck received his candidates as a mentor in Berlin, Sarah Connor's jury phase took place in Barcelona and Till Brönner's in Rome. Larsito, Mousse T. and Adel Tawil were present as prominent advisors during this phase .
Fourth phase: the live shows
A total of nine participants appeared in the eight live shows, with one candidate having to leave X-Factor in each broadcast. In the process, each singer had to sing up to three songs per show. In the last live broadcast, Edita Abdieski prevailed over the group Big Soul, which had meanwhile been considered a favorite.

First phase: the casting
The castings were recorded from April to May 2011 in Cologne, Munich and Berlin. There were more than 25,000 applicants in one of the three categories 16- to 24-year-olds, over 24-year-olds as well as groups and duets.
Second phase: the superboot camp
Around 160 participants made it into the second phase of X Factor. In the so-called Superbootcamp, the candidates from each category competed against each other for the first time in Düsseldorf . Within each category, the applicants had to perform the same song a cappella : the 16 to 24 year olds sang Born This Way by Lady Gaga , the over 24 year olds True Colors by Cyndi Lauper and the groups Could It Be Magic by Take That . The jury decided which 24 candidates will move into one of the jury houses. After the end of the Superbootcamp, the judges were assigned the following categories:
- Solo singer 16–24 years: Mentor Das Bo
- Solo singers from 25 years: mentor Till Brönner
- Groups and duets: Mentor Sarah Connor
Third phase: the jury house
In the third phase, each of the mentors selected the four best participants from the remaining eight participants in their category, who should compete for them in the live shows. While Till Brönner received his candidates in Scotland, the jury house phase of Das Bo took place in Hamburg. Sarah Connor received the groups and duets in Berlin. During this phase Mimi Westernhagen , the ex-Spice Girl Melanie C and Jason Derulo were present as prominent advisors.
Fourth phase: the live shows
As in the first season, eight live shows took place, in which this time a total of twelve candidates appeared. In the first and fifth broadcast, two acts had to leave the show, in the other five broadcasts one each before the final show. In the eighth show, the winner was determined from among three finalists. In the first six broadcasts, the jury voted out one act after the so-called singing duel. From the four candidates of the last two live shows, only the television viewers voted. The Duisburg police officer David Pfeffer won the final broadcast. From the second live broadcast onwards, he had decided every phone vote of the live shows for himself.

Season 3 (2012)
The jury of the third season consisted of the pop singer Sarah Connor , the Scooter member HP Baxxter , the music producer Moses Pelham and the singer Sandra Nasić . As in the first two seasons, the moderator was Jochen Schropp. The number of categories was increased from three to four, with 16- to 24-year-olds being broken down by gender. This time bands were also admitted to the category of vocal groups. The broadcast of the third season began on August 25, 2012 on RTL; the rest of the episodes up to the final show on November 25, 2012 were broadcast on VOX.

First phase: the casting
The castings were recorded from April to June 2012 in Berlin, Dortmund, Hamburg, Cologne, Munich and Stuttgart. Around 24,000 applicants took part in the four categories of 16 to 24 year old women, 16 to 24 year old men, over 24 year olds and music groups. The casting participants advanced one round if they received at least three of the four jury votes. In addition, each juror could place a “wildcard” joker once in order to choose a candidate directly for the next round. Moses Pelham did not make use of this option. Sarah Connor, HP Baxxter and Sandra Nasic used their joker, but the candidates who advanced as a result were eliminated from the boot camp.
Second phase: the boot camp
92 participants made it into the second phase of X Factor. In the so-called boot camp, the number of participants was initially reduced to 48 candidates - 12 in each category - after appearing for about one minute. After that, two acts competed against each other within each category by performing the same song one after the other, as determined by the jury. The jury decided which 24 candidates will move into one of the four jury houses. In the group of male solo singers aged 16 to 24, the jury selected only five singers for the jury house. Among the solo singers aged 16 to 24, she elected seven candidates because she saw no possibility of a fair decision in one of the duels due to a candidate's illness. After the end of the bootcamp, the judges divided the categories as follows:
- Female solo singers aged 16 to 24: mentor HP Baxxter
- Male solo singers aged 16 to 24: Mentor Moses Pelham
- Solo singers from 25 years: mentor Sarah Connor
- Groups and bands: mentor Sandra Nasić
Third phase: the jury house
In the third phase, each of the four mentors selected the three candidates from the remaining participants in their category who were to appear in the live shows. While Sarah Connor and HP Baxxter received their candidates in Ibiza , Moses Pelham's jury house phase took place in Cologne . Sandra Nasic received the groups and bands in Berlin .
Fourth phase: the live shows
As in the second season, twelve candidates came to the live shows, but this time the winner was determined in only four broadcasts, which took place from November 4 to November 25, 2012. In the first two live shows, the candidates competed against each other within their four mentor groups, with one participant from each group being eliminated. One candidate from each mentor group reached the third live show, in which three candidates qualified for the final show. In all live shows, only the audience decided on the progress of the candidates; the jury only had its mentoring and advisory role in this phase.
