Cilmi at Godiva Festival 2008

Gabriella Lucia Cilmi (born October 10, 1991 in Dandenong , Melbourne ) is an Australian pop singer , best known for her song Sweet About Me .

Artistic career

Cilmi's family is of Italian - Albanian descent. Her grandparents immigrated to Australia.

Cilmi was discovered at the age of thirteen while singing Jumpin 'Jack Flash of the Rolling Stones at a street party . A manager of a record company then put her on the Island Records label and she flew to Great Britain to sign a record deal. She lived there for several months and worked on her album with Brian Higgins , who had previously produced the British group Girls Aloud .

Her first releases were the two songs Don't Tell Me and an early version of Sorry , both of which were on the Australian film soundtrack Hating Alison Ashley . Two years later, the title Sanctuary followed for the soundtrack of the British film The Girls of St. Trinian . She had also completed her first album and the single Sweet About Me was featured on the BBC program Later with Jools Holland . Internationally, the song also became known through its use in Rexona advertising. In March 2008, the song entered the UK Top 40 and made it into the Top 10 week after week. In her native Australia, it was number one for five weeks .

The album Lessons to Be Learned was first released in the UK, where it reached the top 10 on the album charts. In 2008 she appeared in the opening act of James Blunt's tour in Australia and on the Sugababes' Change Tour through Great Britain . In November 2008 she gave several solo concerts in Germany, Switzerland and Denmark. In 2010 she was a support act on Leona Lewis' Labyrinth Tour .

Second studio album

In June 2010, Cilmi's second studio album called Ten was released. The single On a Mission was sent ahead as a harbinger . The entire concept of the album was recorded in the style of dance , rock and pop elements of the 80s. On this album she also worked with producers such as Xenomania , Dallas Austin and Greg Kurstin as well as with the singer and songwriter Ellie Goulding . On a Mission reached number 84 in Germany and number 9 in Great Britain as the highest chart position. Critics praised the album for its new style and new Gabriella Cilmi. However, the album and the single fell short of expectations.

Third studio album

Cilmi started working on her third studio album, The Sting , from October 2010 . On January 20, 2012, a video for the song Vicious Love appeared on YouTube , the song was later released on the album. The album was released worldwide in November 2013 except in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.
