Band history

2002–2003: Foundation and Sound of the Underground

The band was formed in 2002 during the show Popstars: The Rivals . On November 30, 2002, the jury, consisting of Pete Waterman, Louis Walsh and Geri Halliwell , selected the five members Cheryl Cole , Nicola Roberts, Nadine Coyle, Kimberley Walsh and Sarah Harding . They got a record deal with Polydor Records. Louis Walsh was also the band's manager until 2005 when he was replaced by Hilary Shaw. The first single was the song Sound of the Underground , produced by Brian Higgins and Xenomania, on December 16, 2002 . It immediately reached number 1 on the UK charts, where it held up as the number one Christmas hit for four weeks in a row. In March 2003 the platinum award took place. In the next five months after its formation, the band recorded their debut album.

The album, which bears the same name as the first single, was released in May 2003. It reached number two on the UK charts and also went platinum. The song No Good Advice was released as a second single in the same month , which also reached number 2 in the charts. The third single followed in August 2003, the song Life Got Cold , which covers passages of the hit Wonderwall by Oasis. This song reached number 3 on the charts. At the request of director Richard Curtis , the band recorded a cover of the Pointer Sisters song Jump (For My Love) for the film Actually ... Love . The song reached number 2 on the charts. As a result, the debut album was re-released. In addition to Jump, it also contained the songs You Freak Me Out , which is part of the soundtrack to the film Freaky Friday , and Girls on Film , a cover version of the Duran-Duran hit, which was originally the B-side of the single Live Got Cold .

2004–2005: What Will the Neighbors Say?

After a short break, the song The Show was released in June 2004 , which, like the follow-up single Love Machine , reached number two in the British charts. Love Machine was established in September 2004 by ITV as Record of the Year nominations and was ranked amongst the 6th for the charity Children In Need took Girls Aloud in the same year, a cover of the song I'll Stand by You of the group The Pretenders on. Although the song didn't do well with critics, it became the band's second number 1 hit. The last single to be released was Wake Me Up , which at number 4 was the band's first single to miss the top 3.

The band's second album, What Will the Neighbors Say? was written and produced entirely by the Xenomania production team. Shortly after its release on November 29, 2004, the album went platinum and reached number 6 in the charts.

In 2005 the band won the Band of the Year of the magazine Glamor . They were also nominated for best pop group at the 2005 BRIT Awards . Due to the great success of the second album, a tour was planned that would take place in May 2005. They also released their first DVD called Girls on Film .

2005–2007: Chemistry and The Sound of Girls Aloud

Girls Aloud (2005)

After their first tour in May 2005, the band went back to the studio to work on their third album. The album, called Chemistry , was finally released on December 5, 2005. Although the album was very well received by the critics, it only reached number 11 on the charts, the lowest ranking of an album by the band to date. With over 380,000 units sold, it was awarded platinum. The first song Long Hot Summer was released in August 2005. This was planned as a so-called buzz single to rekindle interest in the band. The song was intended for the soundtrack of the film Herby: Fully Loadad , but was ultimately not considered. It reached number 7 on the charts, which ended the series of top 5 hits for the band. Producer Brian Higgins later expressed his dislike of the song by stating that the intention to be part of the soundtrack had creatively disturbed her and that the song was received in a touch of panic, which is why he hated it could. The second single Biology was released, which was highly praised by critics. Among other things, the song was described by journalists from the Guardian as "the best pop single of the past decade". It reached number 4 on the charts. The next single, See the Day , a cover by British singer Dee C Lee , was released in late 2005. In terms of radio airplay, the sing became the band's biggest hit after Sound of the Underground , but only reached number 9 on the charts, which was the band's worst ranking to date for a single. The last single Whole Lotta History was released in March 2006 and reached number 6.

In the same year Girls Aloud got their own TV show called Girls Aloud: Off the Record , in which they could be seen on a promotional tour in Australia and New Zealand. The single Biology was also released in Australia, but only reached number 26, which means that the establishment on the Australian market failed. In May 2006 the band went on their second and first stadium tour, where they played in front of over 100,000 people across the UK. That same month it was announced that the band had a record deal with Fascination Records , a sub-label of Polydor.

In October 2006, the first greatest hits album called The Sound of Girls Aloud was released. It reached number 1 on the charts immediately after it was released and sold a total of over 1 million units. There is also a limited edition of this album, which also contains another CD with previously unreleased songs. Simultaneously with the album, the song Something Kinda Ooooh was released, which reached number 5 through downloads alone and number 3 in the British charts through the additional singles sold. Next came the release of the song I Think We're Alone Now , a cover of Tommy James and the Shondells , which reached number 4. This song was also part of the soundtrack for It's a Boy Girl Thing . A tour followed in summer 2007.

In 2007 Girls Aloud worked with the British girl band Sugababes for the charity Comic Relief . Under the name Sugababes vs. Girls Aloud covered Walk This Way by Run-DMC feat. Aerosmith . The song reached number 1 on the UK charts immediately after its release on May 12, 2007. All proceeds from this song were donated to charitable organizations. Produced by Dallas Austin, this song was the only Girls Aloud single that was not produced by Xenomania at the time.

2007-2009: Tangled Up and Out of Control

Girls Aloud on the Tangled Up tour (2008)

Although speculation surfaced that Girls Aloud would announce their split in September 2007, the band announced that they would be working on their 16th single as well as their fourth studio album. The album, called Tangled Up , was released in November 2007. It received consistently positive reviews and reached number 4 on the charts. In addition, like the three previous albums, it was awarded platinum. The song Sexy! No No No ... released which samples parts of the Nazareth song Hair of the Dog . The song reached number 5 on the charts. The second single Call The Shots received very positive reviews and was even called The Best Pop Song of the 21st Century . In addition, the song was originally planned for the greatest hits album, but was not considered because it was considered "too pessimistic". It reached number 3 on the charts. The song Can't Speak French was released as the last single in March 2008 . The song reached number 9 in the charts, which continues the series of top 10 hits that has now lasted over five years. The song was released at the same time as the TV series The Passions of Girls Aloud , which is about the fact that every member learns something that they have always wanted to do besides singing. In 2008 Girls Aloud were also nominated for a BRIT Award for the second time, this time for “Best British Band”. In May and June 2008 the band went on their fourth tour.

The fifth studio album Out of Control was released on November 3, 2008. It immediately reached number 1 on the charts and was also awarded double platinum, making it the band's most successful studio album to date. The first single, The Promise , became the band's fourth number 1 hit, selling more than 77,000 units in its first week, which was the fastest-selling single of 2008 at the time. They first appeared at and received the BRIT Awards for The Promis the "Best British Single" award. They were also nominated for Best British Band , but didn't win that category. The second single The Loving Kind was originally intended for the album Yes by the Pet Shop Boys , who co-wrote the song. The song reached number 10 on the charts. The last single Untouchable only reached number 11 in the charts and is thus the only single of the band that has not made it into the top 10. From April to June 2009 the band was on tour again. At the same time, the record company released a box set with all the singles that had been released so far.

2009–2012: time out and solo projects

Although Girls Aloud signed a record deal for three more albums with Fascination Records in early 2009 , they announced in July 2009 that they would be taking a year off to take care of solo projects, but that they would be working on another studio album in 2010 . Two months later they supported Coldplay and Jay-Z for two shows at Wembley Stadium. In June 2010, Kimberley Walsh stated that she was expecting Girls Aloud would reunite in 2011. Despite all of these statements, no further plans for a reunion have been confirmed within this year. In August 2010, Nicola Roberts stated that there would be no reunion before 2012.

2012–2013: Reunion with Ten and dissolution

Girls Aloud on Ten: The Hits Tour in London (2013)

As early as April 2011 it was confirmed that the group would perform together in 2012 to celebrate their tenth anniversary. Finally, Nadine Coyle confirmed that Girls Aloud are planning a reunion for a new music tour in early 2013.

Cheryl Cole announced that the group's comeback is planned for November 2012, the 10th anniversary of the band.

The first single Something New was presented on October 16, 2012 on the Girls Aloud YouTube channel. and published on November 18, 2012. The song was the official single for the Children in Need charity event and reached number two on the UK singles chart.

The accompanying album, called Ten , which contains four new songs in addition to the band's favorite singles, was released on November 26, 2012 in Great Britain, where it reached number nine in the charts. The second single, entitled Beautiful 'Cause You Love Me , was released on December 17, 2012, but missed the top 40 and debuted at number 97 on the charts.

In February and March 2013, the band went on one final tour, the Ten: The Hits Tour, with 21 concert dates across the UK. After the last concert in Liverpool, the band announced their breakup on Twitter .
