Herbie goes crazy

Herbie: Fully Loaded is a feature film by Angela Robinson from 2005. The Disney production is a remake of Ein toller Käfer (The Love Bug) from 1968 by Robert Stevenson .

action

Herbie , completely shabby and filthy, is delivered to a junkyard. The owner of the place makes fun of him when the truck driver says that Herbie could once have been a racing car. The beetle then refuses to leave the truck and only drives off when it discovers the exit. He doesn't get very far, however, because his tires are slashed by junk lying around.

Maggie Peyton graduated from college and is overjoyed. Her father Ray wants to buy her a present and drives her to the junkyard the next day, where she can choose a used car. Your choice falls on a Nissan, which is put out of action by the Beetle Herbie , which - although a car - interacts with its environment and has its own mind. So she decides rather involuntarily for Herbie. On the drive home, Herbie takes over the driving and leads Maggie to a remote workshop. Her old school friend Kevin works there and offers her to overhaul the car.

When Herbie makes a test drive to a nearby tuning meeting before the repair, he is at the mercy of Maggie's former school friends and the rigid racing driver Trip Murphy. He scratches Murphy's sports car, whereupon her friends invite both of them to an impromptu race. Trip agrees because he thinks he is superior to the Beetle. Maggie can't prevail against Herbie, who desperately wants to make the race. To everyone's surprise, the classic car wins. While Maggie is struggling to go to New York and take up a lucrative career or to resume her old passion for racing against her father's wishes, Trip puts out another race. 200 racing drivers are to choose their best, who can then drive against Trip for 10,000 US dollars.

Herbie wins the preliminary round. On the eve of the final race, Trip lets Maggie drive his super racing car. Herbie watches the scene jealously. Maggie lets Murphy persuade the loser to give the winner their car. The next day the race begins. Herbie is in good shape, but the jealousy from the previous evening stops him short of the goal. When Kevin sees that Trip has confiscated Herbie, he is shocked. And when Maggie takes off her helmet, she recognizes her father, who had strictly forbidden her to drive because of a previous accident.

However, Maggie's father also has concerns with his NASCAR racing team, Peyton . His son and driver Ray Jr. is in a crisis, so more and more sponsors are leaving. Ray Sr. can keep his main sponsor until the next race, but then Ray Jr. injured himself in the qualification, which is still valid. Now Maggie is supposed to step in as a driver, but her father is strictly against it. Trip has now organized a destruction orgy for Herbie, from which she rescues him. After urging her friend, Maggie still wants to start, but only with Herbie. When she arrives at Kevin's workshop with the scrap-ripe Herbie, he doesn't get any spare parts due to late payment. Only with the support of Team Peyton can they revive Herbie.

On the day of the race, Herbie starts from last place and starts an unprecedented race to catch up. Maggie's father is proud of his daughter now that he sees Maggie on TV and rushes to the circuit. With his encouraging words towards the end of the race, Trip even came within reach as the leader. Herbie eventually wins.

criticism

Stephen Holden noted in the New York Times that the film "cleverly blends the nice mannerism and family-friendliness of the 1960s Disney original with today's 'roar'". However, the film doesn't even try to be realistic in the racing scenes.

"Remake of the hit film" Ein toller Käfer "from 1968, which entertains undemandingly with a solid cast and some pretty effects, but above all remains strangely soulless due to the staid script."

Awards

Lindsay Lohan was nominated for the Teen Choice Award in 2005. In 2006, Lohan won the Kids Choice Award for Best Actress .

background

The film was shot on locations in California and Vancouver . It cost about $ 50 million to produce. It grossed $ 66 million in US cinemas alone.

Lindsay Lohan was subsequently reduced the bust size for the film using trick technology, as the size seemed unsuitable for her role.
