action

Racing driver Jim Douglas and his mechanic Wheeley Applegate take part in the Trans-France Race from Paris to Monte Carlo with their VW Beetle Herbie . There Herbie "falls in love" with Giselle, a Lancia Scorpion , rally participant Diane Darcy; the first encounter between Jim and Diane is abrupt. Jim's and Wheeley's toughest competitors are the German Bruno von Stickle, driver of a Porsche 917 , and the Frenchman Claude Gilbert, who competes in a De Tomaso Pantera .

While Herbie and Giselle love at first sight, Diane initially reacts repulsively to Jim. Both find each other at the end of the race, when Herbie pulls Diane's car out of a pond.

At the same time, the jewel thieves Max and Quincey steal the Etoile de Joie stone and hide it in Herbie's gas tank; Inspector Bouchet and his assistant, Detective Fontenoy, begin the investigation. The stone reappears when Wheeley notices a suspicious knock from the gas tank during the race; it turns out that Inspector Bouchet was the head of the diamond heist.
