Leonard J. South

Leonard J. South (also Leonard G. South ; * 17th October 1913 on Long Iceland in the US state of New York ; † 6. January 2006 in Northridge ) was an American cameraman .

Leonard J. South began his film career in 1951 as an assistant to Robert Burks in Alfred Hitchcock's The Stranger on a Train . He worked on a dozen Hitchcock films for over 25 years. At Frenzy (1972) he was the cameraman in charge, together with Gilbert Taylor and finally in Hitchcock's last film Family Grave (1976). He was responsible for the famous scenes in The Invisible Third (airplane scene ) and The Birds (the attack of the birds on Tippi Hedren ). Other films were Das Fenster zum Hof and Vertigo , in which he was engaged as a camera operator in Robert Burks' team. He has also worked as a camera operator in films such as Hondo , Houseboat and the Cincinnati Kid .

As the responsible cameraman, he was active in, among other things, Hang Him Higher (1968), The Great Beetle in the Monte Carlo Rally (1977) and the television series Detective Rockford - A Call Sufficient (1974).

South held a leading position for many years at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and was president of the American Society of Cinematographers in 1989/90. In his spare time he was a passionate sailor and took part in several international races. His son Leonard South II is a film editor .
