A Great Beetle Returns is an American television film from 1997. The film is the fourth sequel to the film A great Beetle about the VW Beetle Herbie .

The unscrupulous racing driver Simon Moore has his car, the VW Beetle Herbie, scrapped because he doesn't win any more races with it.

The mechanic Hank, a former racing driver, is ordered to take part in the mechanic race by his boss, who owns a small car repair shop. There he selects Herbie as his racing car and wins the race with him. The workshop receives a large number of customers, Hank is celebrated; at the same time, through Herbie, Hank and his ex-girlfriend Alex, whom he had left a long time ago, had a first discussion.

Hank is celebrating more and more successes with Herbie and becomes cocky because he misjudges Herbie's part in the victories. Even the admonitions from Hanks' friend, the artistically active Roddy, cannot change that.

Herbie's former owner Simon also becomes aware of the Wunderkäfer again due to Herbie's victories. When Roddy takes the lonely Herbie to an art exhibition, Simon steals his ignition key. At the same time he lets Herbie's builder, Dr. Find Gustav Stumpfel, when he tells him how he built the soulful Beetle Herbie, he has the German build a car for him in the same way, Herbie's evil opponent Horace.

Offended by Hank's arrogance, Herbie disappears one evening. Hank realizes his mistake and goes looking for Herbie. But in the meantime Horace and Herbie met; Herbie is completely destroyed by Horace.

Hank and friends organize a memorial service for Herbie's leftovers. Dr. Stumpel as well as Herbie's former driver Jim Douglas. You plan to restore Herbie.

When Simon finds out about this, he challenges Hank to a duel; the winner of this race should get both cars. But Herbie and his friends are neither deterred by a flat tire, nor by grenades and laser fire; Herbie wins the race. When Horace, enraged by his defeat, falls down the cliff and explodes, Simon is arrested for illegal garbage disposal; Hank and Alex get closer.
