What Will the Neighbors Say? (2004) Chemistry Tangled Up (2007)

Chemistry ( German: Chemie ) is the third album by the British girl group Girls Aloud . The album was released on December 5, 2005 in England, where it went platinum . The release of the album was followed by a tour that marked the band's first arena tour.

Background information and publication

After the success of the previous album What Will the Neighbors Say? , which was produced entirely by Brian Higgins and his Xenomania production team, Xenomania was asked to collaborate again. The album was produced entirely by Xenomania, and except for one song, it was also written by Xenomania. Chemistry was recorded from April to July 2005 after the band finished their first tour. Parts of the creation process were documented during the documentary series Girls Aloud: Home Truths . It was published on December 5, 2005 in Great Britain . In addition to the standard version, a limited version with a bonus CD was released. This contains covered and newly produced Christmas carols. Christmas pseudonyms for the songwriters were chosen. Although the album was highly praised by critics, it only reached number 11 on the UK album charts, which is the band's worst album ranking ever. Even so, the album later went platinum and spawned four top 10 singles.
The album was released on February 20, 2006 in Australia and New Zealand , but could not reach a satisfactory chart position there.

Music and concept

The album has been described as a concept album "which refers to the band members and what it means to be in their mid-twenties in London". It was influenced by a variety of musical styles, such as: B. French chansons, piano-heavy blues or the choppy R&B of the band Small Faces . Some of the songs on the album deviate from the familiar verse-chorus form of modern pop songs. Except for one song, See the Day , which was originally sung and written by Dee C Lee , all of the songs were penned by Brian Higgins and his team Xenomania. The band also wrote the song It's Magic . This is sung exclusively by Nicola Roberts, while the bonus song No Regrets is sung by Nadine Coyle alone. The song Watch me Go was co-written by JC Chasez , a former member of the band * NSYNC . The song Biology , which was the second single on the album, samples the main theme of the song Club A-Gogo by the band The Animals .

Singles

The song Long Hot Summer was released as the first single on August 22, 2005 . It was written in Los Angeles and was intended for the soundtrack of the film Herby: Fully Loaded , but was ultimately not considered for it. The single was released in two different versions. One version included a live performance of the song Love Machine , which was recorded during the previous tour, as the B-side, while the other version included the song Real Life . It reached number 7 on the charts, which interrupted the band's eight-singles series of top 5 hits.

The song Biology was released as the second single on November 14, 2005. The song received rave reviews from critics, with The Guardian even calling the single the best pop single of the decade . In September 2006 the song won the Popjustice £ 20 Music Prize , which is awarded annually by the music website Popjustice . Although Girls Aloud never released songs in the US, Biology was included in the top 500 best pop songs of the 2000s by the American review site Pitchfork Media . The song Nobody But You was included as the B-side . The single reached number 4 on the UK charts.

On December 19, the third single called See the Day was released. This song is a cover of the song of the same name by singer Dee C. Lee. With entry at number 9 in the British charts, it was the band's worst-positioned single to date. It's Magic , a song that is also on the album and is sung entirely by band member Nicola Roberts alone, was included as the B-side.

The fourth and final single was the ballad Whole Lotta History on March 13, 2006 . With an entry at number 6 in the UK charts, it was the band's 12th top 10 hit in a row. The B-side included the song Crazy Fool , which was co-written by Girls Aloud and sung by Cheryl Cole alone. Another B-side was a live cover of the song Teenage Dirtbag by the band Wheatus .
