Christine "Chrissie" Elaine Hynde (born September 7, 1951 in Akron , Ohio ) is an American rock singer and guitarist . She became known as the front woman of the British rock band The Pretenders .

She has also released songs with other musicians including Frank Sinatra , Cher and UB40 , and she released the solo album Stockholm in 2014. She performed on Live Aid in 1985 . Hynde was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 as a member of the Pretenders .

Life

Hynde studied three years at the Kent State University Art School . On May 4, 1970, she witnessed the Kent State massacre , the boyfriend of one of her friends was among the four victims.

In 1973 Hynde moved to London. For a while she wrote about rock journalist Nick Kent in the music magazine New Musical Express . This was followed by a job with Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood in their then little-known clothing store Sex . Hynde tried to form a band in France before returning to Cleveland in 1975. In 1976 she returned to France. Back in London she tried to start a group with Mick Jones .

In 1976 she returned to London. She sang on recordings for Chris Spedding and Mick Farren . In 1978 she founded the band The Pretenders . In the band, which had great success in the following years, she acted as a singer, rhythm guitarist and composer.

In 1980 Hynde met Ray Davies . In February 1983 their daughter Natalie was born. In 1984 she separated from Davies and on May 5th of the same year married Jim Kerr , the singer of the Simple Minds . Their daughter Yasmin Paris was born in April 1985. In 1985 Hynde recorded a cover version of Sonny and Cher's classic I Got You Babe with UB40 . In 1988 she played the song Breakfast in Bed with UB40 at the celebration of Nelson Mandela's seventieth birthday , which was also released as a single.

At the end of 1989 Chrissie Hynde separated from Kerr and became involved in the "Animal Rights" movement. In 1997 she married the artist Lucha Brieva. In 2009 she worked on the Christmas single Postcard from London by former Kinks frontman Ray Davies . In 2010 she released a new album under the name JP, Chrissie & the Fairground Boys : Fidelity! . In the same year, Hynde, together with David Gilmour , Bob Geldof and Gary McKinnon, re-recorded the rock classic Chicago by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young to protest against the extradition of Gary McKinnon to the USA and to support it with a simultaneous appeal for donations.

Chrissie Hynde's first solo album, Stockholm , was released in June 2014 . In 2015 her memoir was published with the title Reckless - My Life As a Pretender.

Trivia

On June 8, 1989, she said at a Greenpeace press conference that she wanted to throw an incendiary bomb into a McDonald’s branch. The following day, a McDonald's restaurant in the English city of Milton Keynes was actually destroyed by arson. In a lawsuit, Hynde undertook to refrain from making statements of this kind in the future.

In 2015, the Rolling Stone listed Hynde 63 of the 100 best songwriters of all time .
