Christopher John Spedding (born June 17, 1944 ) is an English rock and fusion guitarist best known for his work as a studio musician.

Live and act

He was born Peter Robinson in Staveley , Derbyshire . Since his father died as an aviator in World War II before his son was born, he was given up for adoption at the age of three months. He was named Christopher John Spedding by his adoptive parents and lived with them in Sheffield and Birmingham.

In 1959 Spedding founded his first school band, from 1964 he was already working as a ship musician. In 1970 and 1971 he was a member of Ian Carr's jazz rock formation Nucleus , on whose first three albums he participated (also as a composer) and with whom he played internationally, e.g. B. was on tour at the Newport Jazz Festival and the Montreux Jazz Festival . He also played with Jack Bruce and Mike Gibbs . In 1972 he founded the band Sharks with Andy Fraser in London , which recorded three albums. His reputation as a top guitarist grew steadily and many artists booked him as a guest musician, e.g. B. Bryan Ferry for the album Let's stick together . He was also involved in Nick Mason's Fictitious Sports album with Carla Bley .

At the same time Spedding released his first solo albums. With Motor Bikin he achieved an international top ten hit in 1976. However, he became better known through his studio work for artists such as Roxy Music , Elton John , Brian Eno , John Cale , Jack Bruce , Tom Waits , Laurie Anderson , Marianne Faithfull , Annette Peacock . He also produced the first demo recordings for the Sex Pistols ( Problems , No Feelings and Pretty Vacant ) or took part in a tour of Mike Batt’s Wombles in the appropriate costumes .

When guitarist Mick Taylor left the Rolling Stones in December 1974 , Chris Spedding was to be his successor - but he refused. Instead, his name can be found on more than 200 albums as a musician or producer. He is represented in all styles of rock, folk, blues and country.
